So little by little we are finding out the first wave of UHD Blu-ray titles and I am honestly excited to see how it all works out!

But it was my understanding that region-coding was all about rights & distribution.

Wonder why it wouldn't apply to a new medium?

As others have said, if you have to register your disc online, then region coding is not needed. You import a disc from America to England, try to play it, & a message comes up: sorry wrong region. I think, but I don't know. This close to launch you would have thought all this would have been explained, but I haven't found any full official explanation of how this will all work online yet, unless I've missed it.

Will have to find out more about the Panasonic DMP UB900 and the price point but I might just get the Samsung UBD K8500 UHD Blu-ray till better players from companies like Denon, Marantz and Oppo come out in a few more years.

Panasonic DMP UB900 MSRP $?

Samsung UBD K8500 MSRP $400 EST Arrival at Best Buy Magnolia 2/17/2016

First movie that I will pre order will be The Martian on UHD Blu-ray. Then I will need to save up for a Marantz receiver with Dolby Atmos and DTS-X! I will consider an Onkyo and a Denon as well but I will do alot of research before buying.

Barring any bad reviews I think I will pick up the Samsung as an interim UHD player for a few years till there is a Marantz, Denon or Oppo solution available.

First batch of UHD titles I intend to purchase:

  • The Martian
  • X Men: Days Of Future Past
  • Life Of Pi
  • The Maze Runner

^^ Those are the same titles I have preordered from Fox Connect (I also ordered The Peanuts Movie). I have the same line of thinking on the Samsung (it should hold me over for a few years), although I'm not waiting for the reviews (I can always return it to BB if necessary).

Those should get me started. If I see movies from other studios similarly priced (under $20), then I get some of theirs as well.

Sony has announced they won't have a 4K Blu-Ray player on the market until 2017 and will instead focus on 4K streaming. That's not a good sign...

UGH! That thought sickens me. I hope we can hold on until streaming can equal the quality of a physical disc. I wish the masses were also home theater enthusiasts!

Hold on to your blu-rays folks, it's the end of the road for packaged media.

Precisely what I'm planning to do: hold onto and enjoy my Blu-rays. This is not something to be overly concerned about if you're mainly interested in classic movies - as we've discussed recently, HDR encoding is likely to be inappropriate for most classics, and the resolution bump to 4K on its own is not going to make a major difference unless you have a huge screen.

The upside is that we don't need to wait another 10 years to be drip-fed catalog titles on UHD BD, along with the expense that entails. We can enjoy the wealth of catalog titles on BD, which look fine when upscaled to 4K.

Meanwhile, for newer releases which receive the full 4K+HDR treatment we can either purchase the UHD BD, or make do with 4K streaming (which is also HDR encoded). In my opinion, given the disposable nature of modern movies, I'm really not going to fuss over the quality difference between streaming and disc.

It's being reported that the UHD BD disc looks better on a 1080p display than the included BD. If true, that should steer a lot of people in the direction of a UHD BD purchase over the regular BD, whether they have a UHD BD player yet or not. Getting better PQ just by adding a $400 player, without having to replace one's precious plasma is something that would be seriously considered.

While UHD isn't even a remote consideration for me at present, the above makes sense, given the upscaling principle.

Assuming the UHD-BD format catches on, I suspect my initiation will be via 4k/1080p Blu-ray combo sets!

CHEERS! :)

Will a UHD player work with a newish 1080p plasma if you are only going to use it for 1080p? I don't have a 4K set yet but am in the market for a new Blu player so if the UHD will work I might as well...

Yes of course it will work. Just like a Blu-ray player will play on a non-HD display, a UHD BD player will work on a 1080p display. Of course the output will be 1080p on 4K content, but it still has the much higher bit rate and will look better as a result.
