I know I'm in the minority where I watch 3D only on my Panasonic AE8000 projector. So, if Samsung, LG, whoever stop making 3D TV's it doesn't affect me. As long as the 3D Film Archive and others continue to release 3D titles on Blu-ray in 3D its fine.

I had to double-check when this thread started... almost 2 years ago. Yet here we are still talking about the death of 3D - talk about drawing it out.

I personally never got into 3D at all. I can't take it in the theater (because of my eyesight, one eye remains constantly out of focus where under normal conditions my other eye compensates - the glasses somehow prevents that compensation, and wearing my regular glasses under them creates distortion between the images), so I never bothered looking for it for the home. Besides, I already had perfectly good TVs and players in the house. I wasn't about to spend my limited resources on new stuff since there was no benefit.

It's the same with 4K now. My biggest screen is 46", and while I would certainly upgrade to 4K if I could, I can't, and don't see a way to anytime soon. I'm sure that's pretty typical of most consumers in general. Where is the benefit for casual viewing?

I just hope the curved screens are a thing of the past by the time I can get 4K (or higher). I hate curved screens with a passion. I know not all of them are curved, but for a while it seemed more than a few manufacturers were looking hard at the curved format.

Are you assuming your projector will outlast you? If not, what happens if 3D projectors are no longer manufactured?

3D movies are still being made and most are available on Blu-ray 3D. Think that Blu-ray 3D will only die when physical media dies.

3D releases will dry up when there are no more displays capable of showing them. This day seems to be approaching fast.

3D Blu-ray may never "die" but like all failed gimmicks it will become increasingly niche which it is already in the process of doing.

I'm thinking/hoping that at least one of the major manufactures will continue to support 3D if for nothing else to have a competitive advantage. I know that when it comes time for me to purchase a new display the manufacturer that still supports 3D will get my dollars. Too bad it won't be Samsung as I do like them.

Well if there is any historical precedent, its that Pioneer was still making laserdisc players until as late as seven years ago(!), a decade plus after every major studio ceased supporting the format. So hardware may still be out there but the software will have completely dried up.

Better yet, I read that Betamax was still in production until just a month or so ago (it was reported in the news recently that production had just officially ceased)

Hell, at this point I wouldn't be surprised if there was some small Maldivian nation still producing CEDs.

There will always be at least a few displays for sale because there are simply too many 3D discs in the wild and demand will be there just for that. Even if 3D releases dry up. Probably will be constrained to some of the higher end models though. Besides, even if one lose interest in their 3D collection they may think it only temporary and will want the capacity to play them if they want to.

I did say in a later post that I am expecting/hoping that at least one of the major manufacturers will stick with 3D just to corner that niche. But yeah like others, and myself have said, it will probably be akin to Laserdisc and Betamax technically still being produced even in this day and age.
