After beating Oryx challenge mode my clan has fizzled and I have slowed down, waiting for next content drop. I have a ton of quests sitting at final step tho:
Sleeper Stimulant, my 2nd No Time To Explain, Boolean Gemini, Chaperone.

If anyone is willing to help with those I'll gladly return the favor on any of your outstanding quests or other mission needs.

(Kadath on PS4, havent played on X1 since TTK came out)

My son is going crazy trying to get through the King's Fall raid. It's tough to get a group together when it's not a school night and get everything done before it resets!

Interesting pseudo-scientific attempt to classify Destiny's rewards system as an addiction (according to DSM-V) and equating it to gambling. I say pseudo because obviously this gamer isn't a scientist, and the results were not published in a peer-reviewed psychology journal, but it's hard to find fault with a lot of his premises.

That said, I'm still playing. For me it's not even about the loot anymore. It's about hanging out with the 2 dozen or so extremely active folks I met in the 100 group I joined, who also continue to raid, nightfall, and banner with me.

The boy FINALLY took out Oryx. The raid went 5+ hours. During our Chinese New Year/ Super Bowl party. (Fortunately, he finished before game time.) Then he said he has to play King's Fall a few more times because he didn't get great loot and some of his friends from school have yet to complete it.

I almost smacked him! :D

It's the ultimate gateway drug Aaron. According to Destiny Tracker I have 14 Oryx hard mode clears (not to mention dozens of clearances of various stages of Oryx HM) and I still haven't received a 320 class item for any character. So RNG based loot is totally designed to keep you playing and chasing gear...

That's a loaded question. Just like Vault of Glass, it completely depends on your fireteam being competent at their jobs, because each stage has distinct roles for everyone on the team. Two nights ago I had my "dream team" from my 100.io group (basically the guys who are comfortable with doing more than one role per stage so we're very interchangeable) do King's Fall Hard Mode in about 75 minutes, with only 2-3 wipes in the whole thing. But I've had it take 2-2.5 hours even with experienced guardians, but perhaps they didn't know all of the roles as well. And then of course you have the nightmarish "trapped in Kings Fall for 6+ hours because people don't know what to do" stories...

I'm still not sure I get the whole concept of "you have to do online research to complete this mission because there's no clue in the game itself about the VERY SPECIFIC tasks you must perform." Or so it seems to me.

First time, I thought the same. Once I did learn it, though, it actually has become second-nature to me. I now actually enjoy going into new raids blind, even though it may take hours to do them, as long as they have checkpoints. First time I did King's Fall blind, we got to the Warpriest in like 5 hours, which is approximately 40% of the way through the raid. Now we finish it in 2. But I had a blast the first time, because since we were all going in blind on release day, I had a cool group of teammates who were supportive of each other at every step.

Precisely that. You DON'T have to google it, just if you want to do it fast. Going in blind is a real challenge but sooo fun, and I say that as a dirty casual.

Content release this spring, Expansion in the Fall, and Destiny 2 for 2017 confirmed in today's weekly update, I may come back sooner than expected. It's been a good break.

How are you supposed to figure out the "guys stand on platforms, last guy jumps up them counterclockwise, make sure you kill the daughter on the left first" kind of stuff? Are they variants of techniques learned in smaller, easier missions? Trial and error must take freaking forever!

Trial and error does take a while. And there are multiple ways to do it. We started with killing the left daughter first, now we kill the right daughter first. And yes they are variants of techniques learned throughout Destiny. Totems and plates have been around since Vault of Glass and Crota's End.

Bottom line if you are a Day 1'er, then it's in your DNA to try and figure things out. If you're not, then yes you need to check the internet/forums/reddit after people have figured it out and started to post guides. If you don't like doing any of those things, Destiny (and games like it) are probably not for you, at least not the "end game" content like raids. You can still do bounties, missions, strikes, PvP without any (or very little) foreknowledge of the activities. But for end game content dropping the highest level/quality loot, I think it's fine that they make you work for it a little bit.

And let me add, you can traverse between the types of players that I pointed out in my previous post. I started out primarily just doing missions, bounties and strikes. Walked into PvP and got my a$$ handed to me, and stayed away. Also couldn't get six people together for a raid. Then I joined the100.io and found a raid group. A small portion of that group also liked PvP so I started doing Iron Banner and Control (the easiest PvP playlists) and started to love those. Now I'm doing Crimson Doubles and dipping my toes into Trials of Osiris (the most difficult of the PvP playlists). I also joined VoG and CE late so I did those raids after the strategies were already known. By the time King's Fall came 'round me and my group organized taking a day off of work and playing on D1. There's no right or wrong way to play, and you can start playing a game one way and be in a very different place months later.

And now I finally have all hard mode Harrowed armor for all three toons. All are mid 319s. Only thing holding me back? I've never even sniffed a 320 class item even though I've cleared Hard Mode Oryx tons of times. And my Harrowed Warlock helmet is 316 (all other Harrowed armor on all toons are 320, and weapons galore 320). There's no real difference between 319 and 320 in the current meta, it's just bothering me that after lots of clears I don't even have one 320 class item on any character.
