Hey gang,

I *think* I have an idea of my problem here. . .

I frequently plug a laptop into this projector with a VGA cable and run DVDs. Never an issue.

I tried to play Jurassic World on blu by connecting my Sony 5200 deck via HDMI. No picture.

I *think* the problem is that the 5200 is trying to output 1080p, and the projector can't handle that resolution.

There's an "Output Video Resolution" setting on the 5200, but the only options are "Auto" or "Original Resolution," where Original Resolution locks to the resolution of the source material.

Does anyone know of an easy way to run a BD on this setup? Worst case scenario, I could maybe use my PS3 and lock the output to 720p, but unhooking it from my main rig for this purpose (outdoor use) would be a hassle and not something I'd want to do on a regular basis.

So this is where things get weird.

Last night, I fired up the 5200 and went to the screen output setting. Lo and behold, it had a number of options (720p, 1080i, etc.). Neat! So I plug it into the projector, but out of curiosity, don't do anything with the screen setting.

I put in Les Mis on blu. It starts right up, and plays just fine! Odd. I try Wall-E, and that's fine too.

Next, my neighbor comes by with the very same Jurassic World disc that we couldn't get to work on a previous occasion. (We tried both my Sony deck and his Samsung deck, no dice either way.) AND IT WORKS!

Same disc, same player, same projector, even the same HDMI cable. Our theory is that it didn't work the first time because fourteen people were sitting there, watching us futz with it for about 20 minutes before we gave up and watched the DVD instead. The Universe was just messing with us. Sigh. . .

Weirder still. . .

We take the gear out to the driveway and set it up. The difference now is that I'm running HDMI through my Panasonic sound bar (the model number escapes me at the moment). Nothing! I take the sound bar out of the signal chain, and everything is OK again. If I plug the BD into the sound bar, we get sound, but if I then add the projector, silence.

Long(er) story short. . .the fix turned out to be disabling 24 fps output on the BD player. I guess maybe the sound bar was interrupting some kind of handshaking between the player and the projector where the projector told it not to use 24 fps.

Anyway, The Martian was a lot of fun. (Gravity was funner though.) I can kinda-sorta see why it was in the Comedy category. :)
