A young lady I work with has a practically new 6 and she said out of the blue the phone just shut down (battery near full) and it will no longer turn on. Plug it in to charge, nothing, plug into iTunes, nothing, Doesn't make a sound, no vibrations, nada. It's dead Jim.

I tried to do the reset by holding down the power button and the home buttons for 15-30 seconds. Nothing. I Googled ideas to fix and no luck. This thing is dead.

Anyone have any ideas how to get it back to life?? I'd hate for her to have to throw it away.

Note that she did give up and go to Apple store and got a new phone, but we're at the point that we both want to figure this out just to see if we can bring it back to life. She could then sell it quick. LOL.

Thoughts?

Apple store had no idea what the cause was according to her.

Did she have ANY work done on it by an outside (non-Apple) company? I've heard that there is a security measure that causes "bricking".

Nothing at all. Just a low key non-power user. Calls, text, no games.

Bummer and quite strange. It's possible it was a complete fluke: manufacturing isn't perfect and there is bound to a unit that suffers infant mortality after being sold.

I'm surprised that Apple let her keep it after replacing it. From what I've read, they do a swap for warranty service and then may send the failed device on for corporate testing to understand failures and find improvements. And DOA iPhone would seem prime for internal QA review.

I just got my phone replaced by apple out of warranty for a fee. They kept the old phone. It is quite surprising she was allowed to keep the phone.

Well my daughter iphone 6 finally took a final dump after two years. :(

It would charge to 100% and then drop to 20% an minute later, or it would constantly reboot. It was a mess. Took it to Apple store (what fun that place is..lol) and was told battery was dead. For $80 could replace battery, BUT he claimed there was a tiny scratch/crack in the screen and they MAY have to replace the screen for almost $200 "IF" it broke during battery install. No thanks.

So I went upstairs to the Best Buy store and talked to one of the few older sales guys there and we settled on trading in her phone and getting the 32GB 7. I got really lucky, the phone had been in case, had that glass screen protector, but still had some scuffs and worn areas on it. But it did boot up and run. I looked up trade in for "fair" rating and it was $45 for 16GB. He ended up saying he'd "help me out" and gave me a $172 BB gift card as trade in value to apply to new phone plan! NICE! So I took the deal. ATT plan will go up but not at the full amount of close to $25 per month, closer to half that.

So I took it home and tucked it away in my daughters dresser and when she got home told her battery wasn't due for 3 days and just use old phone that's in her dresser...she was shocked to see the new phone. :)

Hoping this one lasts and holds up. I really despise their "dongle" set up vs. headphone jack, totally stupid set up, but a great money maker for them when all the folks run back to their Apple store to buy a bunch of replacement dongles. Told my daughter she better hold on tight to hers, do not lose it! :)

Man oh man, I wish I had just started her out on Android! So much cheaper and easier to work with!

I still don't understand the "Android is cheaper" mantra. An Android equal to an iPhone 7 costs the same, $600-$800. You can buy a cheaper Android phone...but you can also buy a cheaper iPhone. And both are lower featured than a current "flagship" phone.

I guess if you're buying the buy-one, get one for a penny Android phones there's no Apple equivalent. But if you're that sort of value shopper, you're not looking at an iPhone 7 in 2016/2017

I'd put my new Axon 7 up against the iphone 7 ANY day and I bet it would beat out the iphone in most if not all categories. And it would cost me a FRACTION of the cost. :)

Better screen, more storage, more memory (RAM) , expandable storage, better battery, bigger camera, USB C fast charge, headphone jack, all aluminum body, great fingerprint scanner, awesome Dolby Atmos front stereo speakers...the list goes on.

And I paid $350 for it. 64GB version. Came with case, headphones, and USB C/Micro USB adapter.

My wife's iPhone 6 is doing the same kind of dance as what Alf describes here. It can go from a full charge one minute to a low charge the next and then shut off. Or just shut off when showing a 60% charge.

Is this a sign that the battery is bad and needs to be replaced?

My iPhone 6 purchased at the same time is working just fine.

I'd run the battery test app and see if it shows that the battery is failing. That's what happened to my daughters phone. I didn't realize there was a new app for testing (we had store guy do the test). Give it a try to see what's up.

Good luck!

Not sure, but Apple kid told me it just came out a couple of months ago and told me I could have checked battery myself. I had no idea. I'm not sure where it's hiding in the phone or app store.
