So I purchased 2 Polk monitor series 70 speakers for the fronts, and 30's for the rears. Also the cs1 center and two 10" psw. Issue is power. My Yamaha receiver cuts every time I try to push the system. I've read that the monitor70's require a lot of power, but can't seem to find how much. Is there a receiver powerful enough to run the system? Do I need a separate amplifier? Any suggestions on budget conscious amp? TIA

What Yamaha receiver?

While those subwoofers aren't the most capable in the world, do you have your mains set as "small" and the crossover properly set in your system?

Those mains have a 90dB sensitivity rating, so unless you're using these in a large concert hall, you need less than 10 watts to hit north of 100dB. Not sure where you read that they "need" power.

At a glance, that receiver should be fine with those speakers. It pulls 270 watts from the wall. If we conservatively estimate it has 200W after video/processing that leaves a solid 40 watts per channel in a 5.1 configuration - enough to produce ear-bleeding SPL even in a decent-sized room. Actually, getting a real-world 40 watts to each speaker is easily more than you should need.

1W --> 90dB
2W --> 93dB
4W --> 96dB
8W --> 99dB
16W --> 102dB
32W --> 105dB
----------------------
64W --> 108dB

Before you consider ditching the receiver and going down the power amp road, you should be certain that you have properly set up and configured the Yamaha.

1) Have you run YPAO and listened to the results?
2) What is/are your crossover/s set to?
3) Make sure you are using the preouts for your subwoofers (don't take offense if you knew better than this - I just want to cover all the bases)
4) Have you properly configured your subwoofers? (set crossover to max, volume to roughly 50% before running YPAO)
5) Are your mains set to "small" (if not, this can have a huge impact in performance when you really try and push your system - let the subs handle the lows)?
6) What are you listening to when it "cuts" (I assume you mean "clip")? Does this happen regardless of source?

Jason, thanks for your help. Currently the equipment is not hooked up. I'm in the process of building the theater room and went cart before horse style. First thing I did was buy the equipment, and as soon as I got it, I had to hear it. I did run the YPAO with the receiver. But it was done in an empty basement. I didn't adjust any crossovers, I did use the preamp for the subs, I did not have the mains set to "small". Thank you for that suggestion, after looking into that I think it may solve my issue. As far as what I was listening to when the receiver "clips".....steady dose of Foo Fighters.
Thanks again for your help.

OK, Dean, I gotcha - I totally understand the urge to hear your new gear come to life. I don't think there should be any cause for concern at this point - setting the mains to small and finding the optimal crossover for your room (when finished and filled with furniture) will make a noticeable difference, and should improve things a great deal.

That being said, please come back and let us know how things are once everything is finished. If you are still having issues, there are many members here that will be able to offer additional help to dial it in and troubleshoot problems.
