My goodness, they're certainly not adverse to killing off major recurring characters. And the substitute Kara at work was a stitch.

There was a lot packed into this episode. Alan Moore's "For the Man Who Has Everything" is rightly considered one of the greatest Superman stories ever told, so they were stepping into big shoes when they tackled this episode.

I was a bit torn by the structure of this episode. The greatest dramatic tension came from Kara's professional life at Catco unraveling while Hank tried (and hilariously failed) to step in. But part of me wishes we'd lived in the world of her idealized Krypton longer, that the episode had waited a bit more before peeling back the curtain. Given that in 2016 we've seen so many episodes where the protagonist is caught in a dream or alternate reality, I don't think it'd have fooled anybody. But it would have given us a bit more exploration of Krypton behind the Zor-El family apartment.

Hank's explanation why he took the blame for Astra's death genuinely moved me. It says a lot about my level of investment this early into the show's run.

My goodness, they're certainly not adverse to killing off major recurring characters.

I like that the DEO weaponized Kryptonite, and was able to use the weapon to lethal effect. Over the years, Kryptonians have gotten a little too overpowered in most versions of the story. Having that knife means there's a way to kill Kara, too.

Nice episode. I was glad that they made use of Maxwell Lord's knowledge while keeping him there. We still don't know the endgame with his character. Maybe there is a chance that he be redeemed and they will be able to trust him? Somehow I doubt that.

I thought it was a shame about Astra, who was a great character. Nice work from Chyler Leigh as Kara's sister tonight. The show is really hitting all the right notes.

This was a well done episode. I've seen this story before with Superman on the Justice League and the stuff with the supporting cast really helped set this apart. Loved the scenes where Hank posed as Kara opposite Cat. At least she stopped calling her Kyra. Was surprised at Astra's death. Chyler was really good as Alex this week.

Never thought I would enjoy a female "superhero", but this show is very well done. Don't really care for the Cat character, but she is necessary for the story. Everything else is really good.

A bit behind on the DVR, but Astra is gone? I found her incredibly annoying, I won't miss her.

No doubt, this show benefits from an incredibly solid cast. Melissa Benoist has also displayed some fine acting chops and range of emotion, all with equal believability! What's really surprised me is what I've dubbed Supergirl's David Banner/Incredible Hulk complex; Do NOT make Supergirl angry--She WILL retaliate!

I agree that Chyler Leigh really distinguished herself in this week's episode! In my opinion, her character is also a sort of Supergirl, in a way!

CHEERS! :)

Chyler Leigh's character is a far cry from her character in Grey's Anatomy for sure.

I'm not up on all the Superman/Supergirl mythology. So if this episode is a homage to something else, it's lost on me. Agreed Astra's death was a surprise. But given the little I know of Superman beyond the Reeves films and George Reeves series, isn't there some twist they could pull out to reincarnate her? Maybe Max Lord has some more tricks he can use.

We certainly do have a lot of riches now on strong TV female leads with Supergirl and Agent Carter.

Never even recognized Chyler Leigh, had to look it up on IMDB. On Grey's Anatomy she was Meredith's sister Lexie, who died in the plane crash episode a few years ago.

As I've never watched GREY'S ANATOMY, I just know Chyler Leigh from SUPERGIRL, and in my opinion, she is quite good as Kara's sister, Alex.

It'll be interesting to see how the story-lines wind down (Or up?), as the first season concludes!

CHEERS! :)

When shows collect in our queue, this seems to be second only to THE GOOD WIFE in terms our preference to watch. Both my wife and I are really enjoying it. I hope it has a long run.

J'onn said the reason he took the fall is because she is Supergirl's hero. "sniff"

I'm really loving the show.

Tonight's episode was entitled "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" and -- aside from being the first Super-centric story in a long time not to run from Superman's iconic mission statement -- it was a pretty decent examination of all three of those things.

With regard to truth, we had the secret of Hank/J'onn covering for Alex with regard to the death of Astra, Jimmy covering for Supergirl/the DEO instead of staying true to his journalistic integrity, and Kara's secret coming between Jimmy and Lucy.

With regard to justice, we had the dueling conceptions of justice between the Master Jailer, Kara and Jimmy.

With regard to the American way, we had the importance of due process even when the consequences of due process are potentially catastrophic. In the thread for "The Flash", we had a debate about Team Flash's cavalier attitude to imprisoning metahumans inside the particle accelerator. The issue is even more pressing when it's a government agency doing to the illegal detention. To the show's credit, it explored some of the complexities of what leads to internment camps and places like Guantanamo and didn't act like the detention of Maxwell Lord was completely unjustified. But at the end of the day, the show pivoted back to the fact that Supergirl's ideals are her most important superpower, and the right thing even when it's difficult is essential.

Based on Assistant #1's name, she's in for some rough sledding in the near future.

I liked this episode. The best stuff was Kara's attitude to Hank involving Astra's death, can't wait to see her reaction when the truth comes out. I liked the stuff with the new assistant, would like to have seen more of Cat in the episode. Mater Jailer was more interesting than I expected, wasn't expecting the executions. The weak spot was James, I can understand him not liking lying to Lucy but does he really need to tell her Kara's secret? Can't he just say he knows Supergirl?

Did they reference Batman when they were trying to figure out the identity of the Master Jailer?

"Could it be?...No we would know if it was him..."

Or was that a reference to someone else?
