I couldn't even find a mention of gorilla glass on apples site, but a google does confirm they use it. Apparently apple was thinking of using sapphire glass but decided against it. Apparently sapphire is much harder and more scratch resistant.

I'm resurrecting this thread for a friend: What iPad screen protector to buy? She drops her iPhones and is now anxious about taking care of her iPad. (I don't use screen protectors so I don't have a clue)

At work we use Griffin Survivor cases on our iPad Airs. It's not a screen protector, per se, but an overall protective shell much like a lifeproof or otterbox case. It adds considerable bulk but protects well against drops and falls.

This morning my 6+ started giving me trouble. The screen became randomly unresponsive to touch. I'd power off and on and that would fix it, but it would start again. The problem became more frequent. Phone was nearly unusable. Then I saw a light band at the top of the screen and photographed it with my wife's phone.

Took it to the apple store. After describing the problem tech thought it was very likely hardware problem. He said there was probably broken wiring. First option replace screen portion for $130. If that didn't fix it, new phone for $329 (this is the 128gb model). I wouldn't be charged for the screen replacement.

An hour later and they had replaced the screen and it's working fine.

I've dropped this phone at least 2-3 times and it's in an Urban Armor Gear case. Now I'm thinking I need a more impact resistant case. Life proof has only one model for the 6+, the NUUD. Pricey and colors are limited. i like a garish color because I'm always forgetting where I laid my phone at home. That color helps me find it.

Has anyone found a really good impact resistant phone? I used to use the Otterbox Defender but last I looked the colors sucked, mostly dull.

It seems overtime I see a red case, it's a feminine red, not a bright, vibrant red. Suggestions, anyone? I like the look of that Spigen that Ron posted in the first post, but it looks like he didn't try it out.

Johnny - After I upgraded to an iPhone 6s this past summer I opted for the Spigen Neo Hybrid case which really slims my phone down so I can carry it in my jeans pocket now. It doesn't have much drop or impact protection and the screen is completely unprotected but I love it and can't see going back to a bulky Otterbox case.

The unresponsive screen problem started to return yesterday. I went to the apple store and they ran diagnostics and it failed the touch accuracy test. The apple dude offered to replace the screen again. I mentioned that the apple person on Sunday said if replacing the screen didn't fix it, the next step was a replacing the old with a new phone. He wen't off to get it authorized by the manger which it was.

I was expecting to have to pay the $329 for the new phone less what I paid for the screen. No, I got a new phone for no additional charge, which was quite surprising, but I managed to contain my surprise. I expected they would go in the back and get a new phone out of the standard retail stock, but he comes back with the phone in a brow cardboard box hardly bigger than the phone. The new phone comes out of the box and the old goes in it.

This means an apple store keeps an inventory of replacement phones separate from the retail stock? Seems like a cumbersome way to do things. Because of the plain packaging I asked if this was a refurbished phone and he said it was new. I wonder if they don't pull the phone out of a retail box and put it in the brown box. If they gave me the retail boxed phone I'd be getting extra stuff, the lighting cable, ear phones, charging transformer.

I've ordered a new case the Griffin Survivor. I ordered it directly from their website which about doubles the price over Amazon. I did this because I could customize the case color. Their are 3 pieces to the phone, all of which can have their own colors. I had fun playing with this a while but settled on red for all 3 pieces. As displayed on the screen, it's a very nice and somewhat bright red. Best I've seen. All the other reds I've ever seen has been a bit feminine.

I checked the reviews on Amazon and they bounced all over the place on customer satisfaction. In the history of man, has there been a product that had overwhelming good reviews, when there were more than 10 reviews? ;)

BTW, the Griffin website has a 20% off right now and free shipping on orders over $50. The 20% off took it below that and shipping was going to be about $12 I think. So I added a cable and paid a buck less than what the case would have cost without discount.

Yes they keep a massive stock of replacements exactly as you describe. BE POLITE AND FRIENDLY & don't push for anything and you will get a full replacement a good percentage of the time, and this percentage goes up if the manager looks and sees a consistent purchase history with Apple. They do their best to keep people happy. Under promise and over deliver.

It seems like a more expensive way to provide replacements. What would they have done if they didn't have one, would they have pulled one from the retail inventory?

My default behavior with any merchant has always been polite. In this instance, I did push a little without knowing it by mentioning that the previous rep and said replacing the phone was an option. When he left to get it approved, I fully expected to have to pay the $329 less the screen replacement charge.

I was going to say I really haven't bought that much from apple, but than I thought I have bought an iPod, iPhone 3s, 4s, 6 plus, iPad 2, and two iMacs. That doesn't include the 3s, 4s, and 6 for my wife. Yea gods, that's scary.

As an aside, while in the store on Sunday I was standing near an iWatch display and there was a young couple looking at them with a rep. He was in lust in the watch and she was being practical. I could practically see the vibes he was giving off for the phone.:)

Thanks for the suggestion, but being the klutz I am, impact protection is a number one priority for me. As I mention above I ordered the Griffin Survivor. I should get it on Tuesday.

My Survivor Custom Case for iPhone 6+ came yesterday. I had problems with it. The screen cover didn't clip on at the bottom. The cover reduced the sensitivity of the screen. Finally the down volume button was hinky, and didn't always operate the down volume. I called Griffin and after the cover clip problem he was talking about sending a new cover. He thought if the screen clipped on the sensitivity issue would be fixed. Than I mentioned the volume button and he said it'd be better to replace the whole case.

Then I mentioned that some of the case reviews mentioned their web site didn't represent the colors well and I agreed. The red I ordered wasn't as "rich" as I expected it to be. He offered to change the colors, so I opted for a mixture of crimson and red. I was really surprised Griffin offered to change the color.

This is all being done for free and they don't want the old case back. This is a case I ordered directly from Griffin. There was no customer trying to persuade the csr. The csr volunteered very quickly all the options. High marks for Griffin customer service.

Here's an update to my iPhone adventures.

My iPhone started to repeat the screen no responding issues last night, including a light bar across the top of the screen. Went into the apple store today and expected I'd get a little flack. this is the third time I've come in with the same problem. Instead, it goes rather quickly since (I was not told this by the previous tech) this is a known problem that is not rare. So I get another new iPhone.

However, it's not a new phone, it's refurbished, as was the first "new" phone. This tech told me replacement phones are always refurbished. Since this was the third time I've had to come in, I asked (nicely) if I get get a really new iPhone. Nope, no dice. So once again, another phone to restore.

Johnny - It sucks that you're having so much trouble with your iPhone. As a rule the refurb iPhones are as good as new ones. Please keep us informed as your adventure continues.

As an aside, I'm guessing you went to the store on Chenal. I've never been there. How is it?

Well, it's the best apple store I've been in. It's the only apple store I've been in.

If you're going in to get something fixed, you want to make an appointment, otherwise you'll wait. Most of the times I've been there, most of the csr's are busy, so if you're going in to buy, and appointment may still be a good idea.

I guess they're a standard store. They can do some repairs there, as proved by them replacing the screen on my iPhone. Apparently, like any representative of a company, some may be more truthful than another. My first refurbished phone was represented to me as new. Nor did that csr tell me I had a non-uncommon problem. My last csr more forthcoming.

When I bought my first iMac, I wanted to upgrade the hard drive and that they can't do in the store. Perhaps that's true of all apple stores.

BTW, the HTF software keeps changing car to car. ;)

Verizon just replaced my 6+ due to very similar behavior. The phone wasn't exhibiting any symptoms when I took it in but they didn't question it. I got the impression that they've seen this problem before.

According to the apple csr, this is a known, recurring problem that occurs in a particular batch of phones. He was surprised I was unlucky enough for me to get two phones out of the bad batch.

I thought I would update my experience with the Griffin Survivor Custom Case of my iPhone 6 plus. The first one had several complaints about it and they replaced it free of charge and did not want the old one back. When I mentioned I didn't like the color, they even let me change that. High marks to customer service. Easy to connect with, easy to deal with, and timely replacement of the product.

I wish I could say I was as happy with the case. It's works well enough and I guess I will stick with it, but I have the following issues with it:
1) Fingerprint ID works sometimes and sometimes doesn't. It works much better without the case, so it's not the phone.
2) The screen protector is difficult to fasten in completely and a little tab often comes unsnapped and I believe this degrades the performance of finger print id.
3) The down volume button needs to be pushed perfectly and doesn't always work.

These were the complaints that prompted the replacement. They were slightly improved with the replacement. I also learned a better way to attach the screen protector not shown by their instructions.

Positives are:
1) Ability to customize the color of the case. All three pieces can be different colors.
2) I have not dropped the phone, but the case seems substantial and I think it would protect the phone in case of a drop, even on cement.

How does the case interfere with TouchID? Is there a plastic film screen protector that goes over the home button? Because that's obviously a bad idea.
