Our Miata is taking longer to arrive than we hoped, so we put together sort of a last minute movie night in the Booth Bijou Garage Theater. Last night we showed 'Woman in Gold' and 'Kingsman: The Secret Service'. We were "sold out" for both showings.

I snapped this snack bar shot just before our guests arrived.

After a hiatus due to the new Miata (waiting for a car cover to be made for it) combined with a heat wave (too damn hot in the garage), the management of the Booth Bijou is pleased to announce our theater will be reopening soon. Our next attractions will be:

I'm very excited to share these two films with our friends!

The Booth Bijou Garage Theater will be back in action next weekend! In preparation for a little film that debuts on December 18, we will be showing:

We just sent out our announcement email a few minutes ago. It will be interesting to see how many of our friends are interested in seeing films they've seen many times before. But, since we already have tickets for 'The Force Awakens' on December 18, we figured we'd enjoy seeing the original trilogy in the Garage Theater, even if nobody else shows up! :)

These showings are already "sold out" for this weekend. I'm particularly pleased that 'The Martian' earned a couple of Golden Globes because it is my favorite movie of 2015!

Why not Waterworld?

Horrible movie! Plus, the Booth Bijou is in the foothills east of the coast, well above any floodplain! :)

The Booth Bijou is hosting a mid-week movie night this week. We affectionately refer to them as "geezer" movie nights, because, generally, only our retired friends will make it on a "school night". :) We are showing:

I'm really looking forward to seeing both of these again. 'No Escape' is much better than the RT critic score suggests. In fact, when Cathy and were watching it in the theater, we agreed it was an excellent choice for the Booth Bijou. And 'The Intern' is absolutely hilarious!

Enjoy "No Escape". I recognized the writing on the signs right off. I used to see it going to work. And no, it wasn't on the border with Viet Nam. Cambodia is in between.

The movie never identifies the country that Jack & his family travel to for his new job. I guess you are telling me it was shot in Thailand. But the fact that Thailand and Vietnam aren't right next to each other isn't of any consequence because the movie is a work of fiction, it's not a documentary. And, of course, the country is never named.

Most movies are fiction. Sometimes so fictional that you have to suspend belief, drop into it and enjoy the ride. But I tend to enjoy it more when I can personally identify with the area it's happening in. That's what I was referring to.

The movie was filmed in Thailand. I was stationed in a rural area for a year, near the border with Cambodia. The people, the city, the writing all were familiar to me. A movie that has personal associations tends to be more real, at least to me. That's what I was commenting on.

Our guests loved 'No Escape' but they REALLY loved 'The Intern'! In fact, 'The Intern' generated more thank you emails than any movie we've shown prior! And justifiably so, it's a terrific comedy! Folks that haven't taken the time to see it don't know what they are missing!

Up next in the Booth Bijou Garage Theater.

It's been too long since I updated my topic. Latest news:

Our Great Northern popcorn machine had an electrical short in July. The kettle somehow shorted out while making a batch of popcorn. The kettle was toast and, given the two problems I've had with it in 3 or so years (thermal fuse failure and this electrical short), I decided the Great Northern brand isn't for me anymore. I spent some time researching various American-made machines and settled on the Gold Medal Lil' Maxx model #2389.

It's an 8-oz kettle (our Great Northern was 12-oz) but it has a larger bin than the Great Northern. I'll have to pop more batches, but there is more storage for the popped corn and I probably won't have to make additional batches between movies.

We we're on an extended road trip for most of September and, upon our return, I finally pulled the trigger on the Lil' Maxx. It's scheduled to be delivered next week. I ordered it from a Gold Medal Medallion dealer, which boosts the factory warranty from 6 months labor and 2 years parts to 1 year labor and 3 years parts. It costs more to get it from a Medallion dealer (generally speaking) but the service is excellent. They will deliver it to my garage theater, unbox it, inspect for shipping damage, place the popper exactly where I want it, then haul away the shipping materials.

The Booth Bijou Garage Theater has been on hiatus since mid-August. We will be showing our first movies of the Fall season ('Money Monster' & 'The Nice Guys') late next week. I'm really looking forward to making the first batch in the new popper!

Wow, wow, wow! Used the Gold Medal Lil' Maxx for seven 8-oz batches last night. It is amazing how much better it does at popping corn compared to the Great Northern machine it replaced! Wow!

1) Every popped kernel received some coating of the coconut oil/Flavocal. With the GN machine, the last half of the popped kernels came out completely white. And, yes, the amount of coconut oil and Flavocal was adjust appropriate to the size of the kettle. The Gold Medal machine simply allowed the popped kernels to receive a more even distribution of the oil!

2) Same brand of popcorn (same bag, in fact), the Gold Medal machine popped kernels were noticably more plump (larger) and more tender & crisp.

3) VERY few old maids! I mean, maybe 20-30 old maids total out of seven batches! The Great Northern machine left 15-20 old maids per batch!

4) Faster! The Gold Medal kettle heats faster and pops faster! The difference was quite noticeable!

I love this new machine!! Short video:
