Hello,

I'm looking to start a home theatre in my house to connect with my Samsung 60UNH7150 Tv. I really do not like the looks of the larger receivers .. so I'll post some links to smaller ones. However, I did see a HTIB that I think looks pretty good. Any recommendations? I'm located in Canada and my budget is max $1000.

http://www.2001audiovideo.com/en/catalog/product/129661-Onkyo-HT-S7500 (really like the tall speakers)
http://www.2001audiovideo.com/en/catalog/product/279546-Onkyo-HT-S5800 (seems like a great price for a unit with Dolby Atmos)

However, both of the above are pretty large.. so I've narrowed down to these two slimline recievers but then I'd have to get a set of atleast 5.1 speakers and I don't think that would be manageable on my budget...

Please help! :)

Thanks

Welcome to HTF. I get that aesthetics are important but buying audio gear because you hate how big it is is going to severely limit your room. It's about the worst possible thing you could focus on. Buying smaller speakers is one thing to hide them in the room, but insisting on having a smaller receiver which just sits on a shelf because you want to shave 2 inches off the top is a hard thing to reckon with.

Hi.. Poor Man Dan here... See Poor Man Dan's Home Theater set up...........You can make a great home theater for under $1000......
The thing is...... You need to look & buy Used..... Why buy new when used will do.....
Just know what you really need. Know the price of it.... Then start looking for good use stuff..
Case in point..... I found a projector that sold for $8,000 15 years ago..... Got it on E bay for $150.00 In great shape.. Works great...
Look real good.. And look again.... And keep looking..... What you need it out there... You just need to find it at a good price.....
I have the Projector... A Laser Disc player... A Blu-Ray player. A VHS player. All going to a 4Ft tall X 8Ft wide screen all for under $600 so far. .And I have Netflix & Hulu & Warner Archives all going to it also....

Have a good one......

Welcome to the forum! I see you have a fairly recent UHD TV from Samsung. When checking out receivers, make sure they support the HDCP 2.2 standard, otherwise anything you connect to the receiver that is UHD (such as an Amazon Fire TV, Roku 4, Samsung UHD Blu-ray player) will only output at 1080p.

Having said that, the Onkyo S5800 may be a good choice (it clearly states in the specs that it supports HDCP 2.2), but if memory serves this is a full height receiver. The good news is that I think (and you may want to check with the manufacturer to be sure) this package will allow you to upgrade to other, better speakers down the road (say Energy, Definitive Technology, Bowers & Wilkins, etc.). As Sam mentioned above, you are going to have a tough time finding one that is a low profile within your budget. The Marantz is nice, but you may find it under powered, plus it will eat into your speaker budget. The Onkyo S7500 is a 2012 model, and will not support HDCP 2.2.

The Onkyo units that you picked out are prepack systems not HTiB units as they come with actual AVRs and a speaker set. You've also seemed to identify the advantage of these in the fact they already come with all the speakers that you need to get up and going. Keep in mind that generally the speakers included will usually be OK but not great. They do however, give you something to build around in the future like Todd mentioned. You can either get a new speaker set like he mentioned or piece it together with the front three, then the surrounds or sub. Of course you might be more than happy with the performance of the included speakers too.

I think the 5800 might be worth a hard look. If you wanted to build something instead you can certainly put together something with that budget. Here are a few options I put together for you.

AVR - Basic 5.1 units to get you started that have HDCP 2.2
  1. Yamaha RX-V379BL $300
  2. Denon S510BT $350

Speakers - I stuck with some sets for ease of linking but you could do individuals.
  1. Polk TL1600 $480
  2. Energy 5.0 set $300 + Energy power 12 sub $200

Thanks ArmSC.

I ended up with the HT-S5800. However, I can't get the unit to display dolby atmos when doing sound tests with videos from YouTube.

The sound however is pretty good without.
