Did anyone see that version of SEVEN BRIDES in Cinerama? Given its early Cinemascope and Ansco Color origins, I can't imagine it looked very good. I also seem to remember reading that in the process of creating the 70mm elements the original negative was damaged.

Off topic, but in response to Jim's question, I did see 7 Brides for 7 Brothers in 70mm, alongside two other abominations released by MGM: Gone with the Wind and Julius Caesar (1953), with its titles, inexplicably, in color, while the balance of the film was in its original B&W. I didn't know Bob Furmanek then, so OARs didn't matter to me.:D Ah, the ignorance of youth! I thought all the while that MGM was doing something to improve the presentation of the films...BIGGER, BETTER, AND IN 8-TRACK STEREOPHONIC SOUND!

Thanks Bujaki. Still off topic (my bad).

My first several times seeing GWTW were the 70mm version. It was years later before I saw it in something like its original aspect ratio. Looking at the film now in its 1.33 version it is hard to imagine they were able to crop the image so severely and have a viable presentation. I do remember the color seemed a bit odd but also that the sound was quite good. I would almost be curious to see it again in that format though I am sure any existing 70mm prints must be beyond pink at this point. Did the 70mm SEVEN BRIDES even play in the U.S.? I had thought it only played in England.

That seemed to be the period when this was popular... I think THE JOLSON STORY also got the 70mm blowup treatment.

I saw Seven Brides in 70mm and the BlowUp was not great but decent, I worked quite well for a musical, I also saw Julius Cesar and it was a complete waste of 70mm in my opinion, the framing was quite horrible, too. I will definitely avoid Gone with the Wind in 70mm - Julius Cesar taught me my lesson :)

I saw 7 Brides at the Casino Cinema in London in early 1974 blown up to 70mm. This is one of my favourite musicals but the quality of the image in 70mm was very poor. Likewise GWTW when I saw it in 70mm both in London and Australia (at a cinema called The Ascot in Pitt St Sydney which had a excellent screen and sound system for its time). The Last Valley looked stunning in 70mm and in my opinion is a wonderful film that never found the audience it deserved.
