The Blu/DVD edits are the official episodes.

In years past, PBS edited them to fit some imaginary timeslot they had to adhere to and combined an episode or two into one, and you probably lost more material than you gained with the tiny extra scenes PBS edited in after hacking out other scenes. This year seems to be the UK versions on PBS, though.

PBS's handling of Downton is why I just import British shows direct now instead of waiting for PBS or someone else to release them on DVD in the states either hacked up or suffering from NTSC Slowdown.

Oh, and Robert's Walking Dead moment? Someone warned me of it, but I wasn't expecting it.

The edits are there this season. I have already caught them when my blu-ray set arrived. I watch the PBS airing 3 times twice on the night it airs and then on the following Sunday and now it is 4 times with my blu which I watch after the episode airs. There you really see the edits.

It's only a 45 minute show in the UK (minus season premieres and enders, which are an hour or longer). How much can they take out? And why do they have to edit anything for a timeslot? They're PBS. There are no commercial considerations to deal with.

Don't you see those damn cruise commercials...the long list of foundations ("along with viewers like you")? And then there's the endless self-promotion...

I personally think the commercial content on "non-commercial" PBS is more offensive that on commercial broadcasting.

Just a pet peeve of mine.

I buy the original UK Edition blu-rays every year from Amazon. I have all 6 seasons and the blu-rays do not contain the extra footage added in the PBS broadcasts. The PBS broadcasts are not edited the blu-rays do not contain the full PBS broadcasts material. I am not the only one who has complained about this. The other thread talks about it.

The edits range from two to 3 minutes in some scenes. Like last season people complained the scene where Jimmy says goodbye to the servants as he leaves was not on the blu-ray.

I hate the commercials which are included on the blu-rays when they could have included the extra footage that PBS gives us along with their stupid commercials. I could report on the missing scenes from the blu-rays this year but I just watched all the episodes up to next weeks episode and do not feel like going through them again.

Like I state I am a big fan and enjoy watching Downton as our PBS station airs the show at 8CST and then again later in the evening which I watch again and then the repeat broadcast on Sunday night once more. So that is 3 broadcast views and 1 blu ray view.

Sorry for not making myself clear before. Do not want to spoil a Downton thread and wish I had not brought the subject up. I will not going forward bring this up again. I hope that people will not reveal plot lines or promos that they may have seen on the thread. I want to be totally surprised. Listen to the Pod interviews they are great!!!

I've watched the entire season except for the last episode. I won't give away anything, but I will say the latter half of the season is among the strongest work the show has ever done. I'm hopeful the finale will live up to the rest.

I had no idea that Downton had released a CD last month of music from all 6 seasons. They also state that the other two CDs have cues which are not on this new one. Amazon has reviews on all 3 of course. Thanks Sam for no spoilers!

I guessed correctly about Mrs. Patmore and Mr. Mason and Daisy's silly jealousy. I felt very sorry for Thomas at the end. I also felt a bit sorry for Evelyn having to see the girl he so obviously wanted a couple of seasons ago being charmed by someone else.

Without a doubt, the writers have turned on a dime and are now building up major sympathies from the audience for Thomas. His game is afoot.

I kind of like the PBS broadcasts. FF through the first five minutes of ads, watch the show and when you get to about 50 minutes, done, and skip the rest of the ads. Much easier than having to do the FF thing every 10-12 minutes.

Worst show I ever saw was that awful remake of "The Andromeda Strain". It literally had commercial breaks every six minutes.

Never have seen an episode, but planning a marathon binge viewing this summer. What version do I go with that shows the full story, no edits?

Hi Stan!

I'm no "Downton" expert, but based on a few of the posts that I've read in this Topic, it seems that every version has SOME edits. It likely comes down to personal preference, in this case. I for one, appreciate the non commercial interruption within the Broadcast aspect that PBS allows, and have been viewing their HD airings of DOWNTON ABBEY this time around. I'm not sure if PBS will get into marathon mode with this excellent series, but in my opinion, it's well worth watching out for!

CHEERS! :)

Tony

My advice, Stan, would be to get the best deal you can and don't worry about the rest.

The show is breathtaking in HD (not to mention the quality of the stories/acting/etc.).

I remember in the first season the compliant was that the US versions had been edited down.
Now I guess it is the other way around now?

Me too. Despite all the awful stuff he's done through the years, I think he's the one character I'm most hoping gets a happy ending (since a happy ending for the likable characters seems pretty assured).
Am I the only one who suspects Thomas Barrow of having poisoned the Turkish diplomat in season 1? Thomas was serving as the diplomat's valet and and made a pass at him. The diplomat (Mr. Pamuk) rebuffed him, and then blackmailed him into helping him get into Lady Mary's room that night. Thomas served him his after-dinner drink, and then Pamuk dropped dead in Mary's bed. That suspicion has always tainted my ability to feel sympathy for Thomas.

Nothing before or since has hinted that Thomas would just happen to have deadly poisons at the ready.

There's one thing that proves Thomas isn't supposed to be any sort of murderer. Did Sergeant Willis ever show up to bother him? No. And Sergeant Willis shows up to bother EVERYBODY.

I'll find the best version possible. To bad PBS doesn't do things like HBO, which ran a mega-marathon of "Games of Thrones, Episode one to the latest show before the new season starts. Took me a few days, but good at "binge-watching". Still two episodes left, but will finish them soon.
