Needed 100 percent more Will Smith and Randy Quaid, but otherwise I liked it. Still wish they'd brought back Mae Whitman as Bill Pullman's daughter, though.

For me, Independence Day was one of the highlights of the decade - at least as far as sci-fi goes. The first 20 minutes of it were of a perfection seldom achieved; the whole countdown/alien invasion/ships landing in New York and L.A. - all the way until that iconic (and now, tragically foreshadowing) shot of the Twin Towers burning with the Statue of Liberty lying half submerged in the foreground. It was a bone-chilling moment, reminiscent in its level of raw paranoia to Robert Wise's original The Day The Earth Stood Still. That the middle act steadily devolved into a series of video-game styled battle sequences, capped off by the whole yahoos in outer space finale did little to dissuade me from the overall feel good that permeated and mercifully diffused the bleakness that preceded it. Today, we're so intrinsically hooked on the apocalypse of mankind as we know it we've forgotten how to extol the virtues and preciousness of life.

Yes, ID4 was hokey and unabashedly flag-waving in its America wins finale. But exactly why and how this a bad thing, frankly, escapes me. It's not a perfect film, by a long shot. But time has been good to it and it holds up; obviously enough for the studio to consider a sequel - which, again, makes me cringe. Years ago, David Lean implored Hollywood's leaders NOT to fall into a rut of making sequels and prequels at the expense of commissioning originality in the cinema. Today, we've stepped very deeply - and BADLY - into Lean's worst nightmare; a purgatory from which now truly original works of cinema art seem possible; the present repeatedly feeding off of its past to sustain itself.

Like Lean, I personally don't see a future in this. And I'm tired of new movies looking like other movies I like better elsewhere. Bottom line: it's about the money. So long as audiences flock to see remakes, sequels and prequels, the studios will continue to crank them out. It takes a lot of guts to gamble on an unknown. The old-time studio moguls knew this but were gambling men. They, of course, had the luxury of wielding autonomy over vast empires no longer in existence today. The fragmenting of the industry has led to a sort of self-perpetuating fear of fiscal failure since their time. No studio can afford to have two flops in a row. So, if they can guarantee a certain return on their investment they'll do whatever it takes to get the money. Remakes, sequels and prequels come with just such a guarantee. Sad - but nevertheless, true. Will the sequel to ID4 find an audience? Yes. Will it make back its outlay? Almost for certain. Will it turn a tidy profit? Highly likely. But is it movie art? ..........hmmmmm!!!

Every Emmerich movie has a good trailer (Godzilla's is a classic)

Then you realize that its going to be a steaming turd no matter what.
I remember Godzilla as pure sh*t, but I rewatched it a while back, after not having seen it in about 10 years, and guess what, it is not actually a total stinker, it does have its moments; although maybe not as good as that trailer, it delivers much more than The Phanton Menace did on its pretty good trailer.

But Maria Pitillo still sucks big time, she won a very well deserved Razzie for that, but do see the movie again; despite her, it is actually quite a lot of fun, and anything with Jean Reno in it can't be all bad, can it?

That said, I have a bit of a bad feeling about this ID4 sequel ...

One huge spoiler in the trailer for those who want to know (regarding Will Smith)

I'm intrigued because I'm a huge fan of the original. The first movie was just a big ball of cheesy summer blockbuster fun. This trailer seems to be taking itself too serious, I hope they don't forget the charm, and cheese, that made the first one so much fun.

That's pretty much where I am. The trailer's not doing much for me. It looks rather serious and dark.

I can't imagine the film revolving around Goldblum's character. But I'm not sure that'll be the case.

I'm sure I'll see it. I will likely be entertained...unless they totally screw it up!

Not only does it look too grim and dark but it also lacks an iconic money shot that the original had with the White House being destroyed, which one of the main draws for seeing it. At least the original was goofy fun and had a solid cast, Smith will be missed, this looks fairly generic.

I guess it depends on how you approach ID. My wife and I saw it on the big screen with some dear friends, and after only a few minutes realised that we must switch our expectations from taut sci-fi to high comedy.

We had a ball - a joyous laugh-fest - much to the annoyance of fellow audience members seated close-by. In fact seeing how seriously the audience was taking it only heightened our mirth. Our pleasure at that screening remains a treasured memory, and my apologies to anyone reading this that was seated nearby in the Perth cinema that day in the late-nineties.

Absolutely agree Ramin. And the flick's climax, with beings advanced enough to reach earth from another galaxy, finally being undone by Jeff Goldblum's character wielding a laptop, had to be one of the most absurd, unintentional comedy bits that the film contained.

Maybe the aliens used Apple computers. Therefore, they would have no idea what a virus is. Right?

That would make sense...if they weren't defeated with a Mac Powerbook.

Say what you will about the first Independence Day, but it was the blockbuster of 1996, in a way that no films are today in the much more saturated movie market. And it's fun from beginning to end.

I think there's a certain movie coming out this weekend that might have something to say about this statement... :P

Agreed tho - I loved ID4...

That looks like the most gratuitous disaster porn ever put to film.

I like Jeff Goldblum, but I think I will pass.
