I believe Digital HD is only 25%, and DVD has 67% of the remainder.

From the latest sales data on Home Media Magazine here, for the past year:

JxbtXKd.png

Even with a substantial rise in BD sales (mostly new release titles), DVD still retains 76% of disc sales.

And from this article (since I don't have access to the original DEG data): "digital sales also surpassed physical-media purchases last year, clocking in at $8.9 billion compared with $8 billion." That is, greater than 50% of total home video sales are now digital. I have no idea how many of those digital sales are HD or UHD, but if it's only a small proportion then that just reinforces my point that consumers don't value quality.

Look, I'm not actively trying to stomp on anyone's dreams here. I hate having to be the grinch who keeps regurgitating the negative facts about the state of the market. But at the same time surely it's not appropriate for discussions on this forum to start heading deeply into the realm of fantasy. Do we really want every UHD thread turned into a wishful exercise in UHD BD cheerleading? Is there any genuine doubt that UHD BD is a format targeted solely towards new release titles? Doesn't it seem inevitable that the UHD BD disc format will largely be a stopgap measure until more people have fast enough Internet access for 4K streaming?

I expect that studios won't license out their main catalog titles for UHD BD for "next to nothing" because they can license them out to the competing streaming and download formats for much larger amounts. And I don't need to believe studio execs, our experiences with Blu-ray over the past few years show that classics on BD generally sell poorly (many true gems struggling to sell even 3,000 copies after several years), so I'm sure that classics on UHD BD will be an even tougher sell.

I totally support the move to the 4K UHD video standard, and I think HDR is a nice addition too. But "95% of my posts" are simply pointing out what I consider simple logic regarding the UHD BD disc format based on the facts at hand:

- physical disc sales are rapidly falling
- consumers have explicitly demonstrated that they value convenience over quality (>50% sales now digital, remaining <50% disc sales are 75% DVD)
- catalog titles generally sell poorly on disc
- HDR, as the big "Wow" factor for UHD, is apparently largely incompatible for classics

So I'm constantly amazed that any sane person would expect anything more than a handful of the big-name classics (e.g. Lawrence of Arabia) to be released on UHD BD. The bulk of catalog titles will be relegated to 4K streaming/download, and for most of us viewing on standard screen sizes below 100", upscaled Blu-rays will look just as good anyway.

I agree with what you say but what I wanted to point out was that many movies SHOULD cost next to nothing to license if they generate so little sales. Obviously this is not how things work as most of the time studios chose not to license out a title at all.

If that's the direction these threads are going to take, I'm happy enough to cease posting on this forum, period. Cheers.
There are plenty of 4K/UHD threads to post such comments in as this particular thread should be about upcoming 4K/UHD titles coming out on preorder from Amazon. There is no reason to get angry and stop posting on this forum as I find your comments very informative and enlightening.

I just noticed some alerts and it reminded me: the other day I posted about pre-ordering some UHDs from amazon.ca if it seemed worthwhile. I wanted to delete the post because I quickly realised this seemed rude after remembering HTF benefits from buying via amazon.com which was posted slightly above my post. Can't delete so just left it as an FYI. Maybe HTF can make a similar arrangement with amazon.ca? While the US$ is strong vs the CAD. I assume the studios want to sell some UHD product in Canada, so they have to price appropriately for the market, like they do in China etc. :)

At $45 for a double dip of a mediocre movie, Warner can go pound sand on Superman.

I thought Heart of the sea was in 2 weeks, they mustve moved it up on me, ordered it via HTF link. Thanks Ron!

$45 for MoS or Watchmen? At that price:
1. MoS should throw in the 3D disc; and
2. The Ultimate Cut of Watchmen should be the box o' junk edition.
