Today we will be saying goodbye to our little Kali, a special cat in many ways. She was a rescue (apparently abandoned) nearly six years ago, and her age was estimated at five or six at the time. She loved this home from day one. No acclimation period was necessary, either for her or for the two boys, Poe and Mikey, who accepted her without blinking an eye.

On Thanksgiving weekend 2013 she was felled by kidney failure with numbers that went off the charts. Oddly and miraculously, she was pulling herself out of it by the time the doctor was diagnosing her, and on day three she was back to being her normal self. We expected the next shoe to drop within days, but it didn't drop, and we started a regimen of giving her sub-Q fluids twice a week. That continued for the next two years and two months, during which time you never would have known she'd had a sick day in her life. We did discover she had other rather major issues in addition to the kidney disease, but nothing ever fazed her.

Her kidneys and her fate caught up with her three weeks ago, and it soon became obvious that this time we were starting down that final road. She gave us so much in these three weeks, while becoming weaker and weaker, and yesterday we knew it was time. As I type this she's being treated to a last protected visit to the back deck where she can watch her beloved squirrels and birds for a while.

Charles,

I'm very sorry that you are faced with this today. It seems like you will have many good memories to keep of your beautiful Kali.

Best regards,
Chris

This may have been mentioned previously somewhere in this very long thread, but does anyone have any recommendations on litter boxes? Domino, our male cat, prefers to not completely squat down when he urinates, often spraying the walls of the litterbox, which then trickles down and through the crack where the lid meets the pan. Some have been better than others, allowing very little to leak out, but this latest box, from Nature's Miracle, is perhaps the worst design I've ever seen. The lid latches very loosely, so when he sprays the walls, he may as well be peeing on the floor. I've got puppy pads underneath the box to catch the drips, and even resorted to cutting those pads and wedging them in between the lid and pan because the leaking was so bad.

I'm at my wits end, and about to just go to Home Depot or Target and buy a large RubberMaid or Sterilite container and make my own covered litterbox.

Charles:

She gave to you and your family...and you all gave to her.

She gave you folks the love that only a cat can give. And you folks gave her a caring, loving home in which she lived a happy life.

Thanks for sharing. Stay strong and remember that the hurt you feel is directly proportional to the strength of the relationship you had.

Charles, I am so very sorry about Kali. You are making a difficult but merciful decision. I hope you will be with Kali every step of the way. In the present moment, it can be difficult to do. In the long run you will take comfort knowing you were there for her.

That is quite amazing that both Kali and your present cats got along right away. Quite exceptional.

Bless her heart and you for adopting an adult cat. Not enough people do that.

Sweat dreams, Kali.

We don't use covered litter boxes, but we've got some open-top boxes that are pretty deep. I think they were World's Best from PetSmart.

Charles, your Kali story hit me right in the feels. I've had many cats during my 47 years and they're all unique and special so when it's their time to go it is never easy. Love the bit about letting her watch the squirrels and the birds.

Miss Kitty should have a boyfriend named Marshal Dillion. :) Uh, I guess that reveals I'm much older than 11. I wish Miss Kitty many more years with you.

Condolences on Kali. I've had to make that decision, too, and it's about the worst feeling I've ever had.

Not to be inappropriate during this solemn time, but I have to admit I got a chuckle out of seeing that little bundle of sweetness sitting innocently below the big "Psycho" poster. ;)
