Dr Smith and robot are the best thing about this series. Everyone else is pretty much devoid of personality.
i remember seeing that original pilot that didn't include them ... first time after getting the dvd set and thought it was still great! also, Angela Cartwright was prob the 3rd best reason I watched the show as a kid. ;)

Watching the pilot it's easy to see why the networks were convinced to buy it.

In a rare move here in the UK many regions started airing the show around September / October 1965 so not that far behind the US broadcasts and around 6.30pm/7pm slots.

But after a couple of months I think the juvenile approach lead to the shows removal across all ITV regions and it remained absent until it had concluded its entire run in the US whereupon it returned in kids tv slots where it remained for the rest of it's life in the UK.

And that was with season 1!!

It's hard to see how the show could have continued in the same vein as the pilot but its unfortunate that Smith was made into such a buffoon.

I agree with the notion that the beginning of Season Two is really pretty good. My memories of seeing those live was one of great excitement and enjoyment. The show was now in color - and that was a really big deal back in 1966. I'd waited all summer through black & white reruns to finally get to see LOST IN SPACE in color.

The early part of that first color episode was exciting because it was the first moments of seeing the show in color. After that, the episode settled down into a bit of hum-drum-ness as Smith wrangled for the cosmonium from Mr. Nerim, but these actions took place against the remaining cast making preparations to leave that planet - an exciting prospect (no pun intended).

As they took off in the Jupiter 2, it brought back the memories of the earliest part of the series. Yes, this show actually did take place in outer space!

The next couple of episodes dealing with the green girl and finding the "ghost" planet were also pretty good, and I was genuinely excited each week to watch LOST IN SPACE. After that, it got bogged down into the silly alien of the week concept, and once again marooned on a planet.

Season 3 attempted to set things more on the adventure course again - and succeeded some of the time, but it too fell into some pretty dire episodes.

Yep I have always thought this is the most famous of the 4 Irwin Allen Sci-Fi shows simply because of the Nostalgia factor. The other 3 are all better/more interesting shows but not as popular. Its always been my least favorite of the 4 just because the title is a little deceiving. Lost in Space sounds like they should be continuing to look for a way home and go to different planets opening up all kinds of interesting new ideas but with a couple of small exceptions they are always stuck on the same planet and the show bogs down into a highly repetitive formula. And while all the Irwin Allen shows are guilty of this none are as guilty of this as Lost in Space.

I guess Stranded on a Soundstage just wouldn't have sounded as exciting. But I agree that the title does convey the image of looking for a way home.

One of the things that cracked me up are the network promos for season 1. Instead of more scenes from space, or shots of alien creatures or action, one of the promos features smiling mother Maureen carrying a laundry basket out of the spaceship.

I wonder how many realized that if the planet they were on in Season 1 blows up in the Season 2 debut then that means a couple civilizations they encountered (the one where everyone was in hibernation I think?) had now ceased to exist! Of course after the first six episodes, continuity never really mattered on this show.

I think the one episode though that really defied all levels of stupidity for me was "Curse of Cousin Smith" not simply because of this character's ability to find his way right to where his "lost" Cousin is, but at episode's end, we never learn where he goes and why the heck they never figure how to use him to get back to Earth!

Finally finished the first two seasons and started watching Season 3 of LOST IN SPACE today. Like the previous season, the menu is exciting and the colors in the episodes are vibrant. Looking forward to my favorite 3rd season episode The Anti-Matter Man. Great boyhood memories watching these programs.

I still can't watch season 2 apart from Prisoners of Space. The move to Batman silliness is way over the top

There are maybe 4 or 5 episodes of the 2nd season I enjoy, but for the most part, it's just too much Children's Theater for me. The 3rd season is somewhat stronger.

A reminder that the new book from Mumy & Cartwright "Lost ( and found) In Space" is now available and I was pleased to discover it's hardback. Can't wait to get it

Best Buy has the complete series blu-ray set this week for $82.99. So I finally picked it up. Still hate the packaging of this set. The outer case is worthless, and those season sets are clunky and heavy. Might have to pick up some empty blu cases and repackage them for my collection, as others have done.

^That's roughly what Amazon has it for right now. I'm looking mighty tempted at that price.

Has anybody noticed some weird video artifacts going on towards the end of The Keeper Part 2? Around 44 minutes or so, when the Robinsons discover Smith is trapped in a cage again. On the left side of the screen, lasts well into the teaser for the next episode. Like vertical lines not in sync with the rest of the image.

Another weird video glitch. The shot of the two moons in the cliffhanger at the end of His Majesty Smith has weird blocky static going on the exact duration of the shot. It even covers the pillarbox bars. The same shot in the reprise opening of the next episode is fine. Unlike the previous glitch, I can't dismiss this one as being caused by light scratches the discs suffered from the awful packaging.

And many thanks to everyone who provided info and links to better cases for the set, not to mention cover art. :)

I can try to photograph what I'm seeing if it will help figure out what the heck is going on?

I just got the Lost (and Found) In Space book stuffed with rare stills and memories from Bill Mumy and Angela Cartwright.
I can't praise it highly enough as an essential purchase for hardcore fans

I agree with you about LOST AND FOUND IN SPACE. There really hasn't been a good LIS companion book. Now, finally, there is.

Can you describe this book better. Thinking about it but for $45 the description is vague.
You should try being a non US customer. They wanted $33 to post it. Fortunately I was able to get a bit of a discount on the postage otherwise I would have had to leave it again.
They did say they were working on getting the non US rates down to a sensible level
