Besides 'Gunsmoke' (where Buddy was also in an earlier b/w episode I recall as one of a double act with John Larch I think as two down and outs) Buddy was guest star in a few episodes of 'Bonanza' I can recall too

in 'Two Sisters' (or maybe 'The Sisters') Buddy's a evil crooked Sheriff always worried about 'the voters' who tries to frame Adam for a murder

while much later he's in 'The Saddle Stiff' as a guy who helps Ben to learn a life lesson

I'm sure Buddy was a guest in 'Rawhide' too - 'Incident of The Stargazer' I think
And let's not forget his appearance as a bum on Andy Griffith! He later appeared with Ronnie Howard on a movie, Fire on the Mountain. He was nothing like Barnaby or Jed in the movie, but was a disgruntled land owner whose land was being taken via eminent domain. I won't spoil it, but if you like Buddy, you're going to love the movie.

The set's overall rating on Amazon is up to three stars. Given the tremendous quality of the show itself, I think that's about where the rating should be if one also takes into account that many of the episodes are edited and the quality is inconsistent throughout.

Although it was great to see the Cannon/Jones crossover two-part episode that opened season four, I didn't think it was as good as some of the Barnaby stand-alone episodes. That may be a function of a padded script to stretch it into a two-parter more that anything. Or it may be that I never enjoyed Cannon as much as the other QM productions. I never got his appeal. Should I give the series a chance now?

BTW, Lee Meriwether's hair change is taking some getting used to. :)

As I move along into season four, the episodes are not nearly as good when they stray from the formula of showing the murder and who did it, then showing how Barnaby figures it all out. When they don't reveal the murderer but only the murder, the episodes are weaker, IMHO.

I agree, the Columbo approach is much better because you wonder when the murderer will slip up. The whodunit certainly can be fun too, knowing who did it but nothing beats a clever detective closing in on an ever nervous killer whose plight you're well aware of. I think it somehow involves you more, the best of Barnaby Jones is like that.

I guess to each his own, my favorite episodes are when I don't know who the killer is and they surprise me. Actually I like the combination of sometimes knowing and sometimes not knowing.

I've been slammed by work lately but it's a testament to the Barnaby Jones set that I am counting the days till I can get back to watching two episodes per night. Most multiple-season sets wouldn't survive a work interruption like this; my mentality for it would be blown and I'd be on to some new set. But I am really looking forward to getting back to Barnaby.

When a show was released on Dvd in the past it was remastered to night of broadcast uncut. Now in 2016 and last couple of years we are getting shows that are just transferred to DVDs in what ever condition they are in . When the fugitive series was butchered by cbs the out cry got cbs to correct the show and release it in night of broadcast condition.shame on VEI and others that are selling these as complete series ! They are asking top dollar for this series msrp of 179.99 . I my self will not waste my hard earned money on this crap. If you have bought this call VEI and complain return it if you can. Other wise every show will be released like this in the future.

Don't know that I'd use The Fugitive as an example here. The Fugitive was and is a high-prestige series that still has a decent syndication value. Barnaby Jones isn't and doesn't. It and (I have to admit even though I liked the show a lot) Cannon were pretty much standard fare -- well-produced and acted standard fare, but still standard fare.

I bought the Cannon set. Other VEI purchases have been Cagney & Lacey and The Equalizer. I will be getting Nero Wolfe when VEI releases it. I'm glad to get all four.

So much cool stuff still to come from VEI that I applaud and patiently await, it won't look like a million bucks for sure but this late in the game I can live with less than stellar picture quality and even the occasional edits. It's that or nothing at all for fans, end of story.

Yep. The golden age of DVDs is over. I feel lucky to get what I get at this point. If the price is too high, I only need to wait.

I agree. I love the complainers that think we will continue to get uncut, remastered shows in a time where classic TV on DVD is in its twilight. This is not and never will be The Fugitive.

Take what you can get and enjoy it. Complaining at this time will change nothing.

To a degree, I think complaints are good. Surprising as it is, sometimes syndicated prints have been released when uncut episodes were available (e.g. season 1 of FKB). However, don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

Just because I bought the set and am enjoying the hell out of it doesn't mean I don't have complaints or lack a critical standard. I simply have better uses for my energy than to spend a lot of time either 1) getting upset and depriving myself of the enjoyment of the show; or 2) spending a lot of time complaining to VEI or CBS. Boycotting the set won't matter. They're going to release what they have the way it is. These are dregs.

I'm putting my energies into a series that has a good shot at being released totally complete. I'm fighting to get disc space for extras, and to create those extras. That deserves my energy, not a misguided endeavor to get Barnaby Jones remastered and re-released. I certainly don't begrudge anyone else picking up that torch. I hope they have success. I'm simply trying to spend my energies where they can maybe do some good in an upcoming release.

After life rudely interrupted my BARNABY JONES viewing, I am back to it.

Although the dramatic quality of the episodes is nicely even, the disparity in picture quality is often staggering. A fourth season episode entitled BEWARE THE DOG, for example, looked as sharp as anything I've seen on DVD. But soon it's back to less-than-stellar images and abrupt cuts.

It's a tribute to how good the show is that I continue to withstand these drastic "climate" changes and keep enjoying this set. I'm approaching the halfway mark.

I just made another purchase from VEI, the McMillan & Wife boxed set. It was on sale for $39 and couldn't pass it up. You know, seeing the actual boxed sets that Barnaby and now McMillan came in, they are sturdy, simple and functional. They fit well on shelves, hardly take up more space than the sets themselves, and look decent.

My lament: I wish Fox had done something like these boxes with LOST IN SPACE.

I love how Barnaby always has little evidence bags in his coat pocket, ready for that stray hair or fiber. I'm particularly amused at how he blows into the bags to open them before inserting his find. Today he'd be seen as committing a cardinal sin: contaminating evidence with his own DNA :)

Yep, things certainly have changed. Barnaby carried little evidence bags. McGarrett would just grab an old envelope from his pocket. Today's investigator has plastic bags, latex gloves, and a breathing mask.
