I picked up a used copy of Red Dead Redemption about a year ago. It was my most enjoyable video game experience in a long time. Eventually I got stuck looking for beavers and gave up trying after running around in circles for a period of weeks. Haven't even thought about it in months, perhaps I should try again.

I think I'll play this next, just wrapped up something else yesterday. Got RDR a few months ago, so far unopened. Whenever I asked somebody who doesn't know me in a game store what game is "good", this is the first title that almost everyone recommended...

Did anyone ever play the PS3 version around here? Picked it and LA Noire up on Black Friday 3 years ago or so and was thinking of finally firing it up. Hope it compares well, since I remember GTAIV didn't hold up so well from a few years earlier on Sony's platform.

I wanted the 360 version of both, but they were letting people grab things early and foolish me didn't show up until 10 minutes before the sale was slated to start (Last time I bothered, much more relaxing just ordering from my PC and avoiding stores each Thanksgiving).

I didn't want to leave empty handed so I made a few compromises with what was left, despite my normal policy of going with the 360 version of last-gen titles unless there was a compelling reason to not do so.

The PS3 version of RDR (with all the add-ons) has been sitting on my shelf for about a year and a half, waiting for some love.

BTW, I think the PS3 edition of LA Noire had a bunch of exclusive extra content. I haven't played it, although I'd definitely like to try it sometime.

Sorry, forgot to say it is the PS3 version of RDR I have.

I originally got the PS3 strictly for its BD-playing capability, not for games, it was a very decent BDP in 2008 compared to what else was out there. It's still decent for that, faster than any of my other BD players, me still likey. (If I didn't have a "regular remote" interface, I'd likely have a very different opinion.) Then I got into the games, to the extent I bought another PS3 (the very last iteration) as backup for my "investment". Since I had a backup, I felt comfortable buying a lot more last-gen PS3 games. Bloody vicious circle. So that's how I got into the Sony rut instead of the MS one.

Have a PS4 too, I don't notice any practical difference in the few remastered for PS4 games I've played, except: PQ is usually a bit better. I notice no difference in the gameplay otherwise. One thing I learned is to upscale video (for 1080p display) using the AVR, usually I just pass through unmolested. The PS3 can't upscale anything for crap, and my Pio display isn't a lot better. So if playing non-1080-default games and you have a fairly recent AVR/pre-pro, be sure to try that.

The complaints some people have with some games on the PS3 depends on your model and how hot it gets. Things can get untenable with certain models (especially the oldest ones) when they get hot; the last models don't get hot, barely warm really, so no problems that aren't endemic to the game itself. You didn't really think those game developers tested more/as widely as MS does for PC stuff did you, and all that MS stuff is bug-free...

I completed playing this a few days ago (didn't start when I said I would, it was early June), at least the main story. I still haven't taken the (PS3) disc out, not sure if I should do a few more things to earn a few more outfits, because I'm not very good at the live bounties or the mini-games (except liar's dice) and those are the things I need, also to kill a cougar with dynamite. I'm not really a completist re trophies etc., and these things will be pretty time-consuming for me. Plus I'll die a lot trying to hit the stupid cougar.

I'll just note that the PS3 GOTY version has some extra things in it that don't seem to be mentioned on the package. Besides that you get a really good horse to start with, there are some extra gang hideouts and I think the explosive rifle and tomahawk might be extra too. Extras aren't obvious when you install, it's all on the BD. Maybe these are all standard on any PS3 version...

With the success of GTA V Remastered, the large number of calls for this one to be made backwards compatible, and the lack of news on a 3rd Red Dead game, I'm really surprised to have seen E3 come and go without word of this one getting the remaster treatment.

The rumor is that the next Red Dead was scheduled to appear at E3 and featured a massive tavern brawl.... The day after Pulse in Orlando. It was deemed too controversial and held off. We'll see.

It also hits the backwards compatibility list this Friday, which all but seals the deal where a remastering is concerned,

Not that there was much doubt when E3 came and left without a hint of it, but I think that many were hoping to see it receive a lot of polishing like GTA V got when it made the transition to the XB1/PS4.

If any of you ever want to revisit this one and own it on the 360, give it a try on a Xbox One.

This is a rare instance where backwards compatibility improves upon the original experience, with it holding a very steady 30 fps compared to frequent drops to 20 fps on original 360 hardware when the action heats up.

I never played Redemption and am curious if Redemption 2 will be any good. I had never played Revolver until today when I downloaded it on PS4 and was sorely disappointed. I realize it was originally a PS2 game but so was GTA Vice City and that is a much better game.

It's a very different game than what came later, and really isn't very good.

So I wouldn't judge Red Dead Redemption or this upcoming sequel based off what you've experienced. It's a C average game from that generation where as Red Dead Redemption is one of the most acclaimed releases of the 10 year PS3/360 era.

I made the mistake to download this on my PS3, since I was thinking it was a hidden gem that just escaped most notice until the sequel arrived and struck gold. But it quickly became evident that there was a sound reason why it didn't receive a lot of attention back then.

Frankly, I'm pleasantly surprised they ever made another.
