iPad Air 3 is what I'm looking for. Maybe upgrading, giving wife the Air 2, and re-purposing the iPad 3.

Unless it's magic, no Apple Watch upgrade for the wife.

The Apple Watch 2 isn't being released until the fall from what I've seen. What I'd love to know about the iPad Air 3 is if they are matching the Pro with Apple Pencil capability -- that may well be very tempting for me.

This is unexpected news of a smaller iPad Pro. I assume it will be also compatible with the Apple Pencil. If so, it's a compelling option if you don't want the larger Pro.

I don't understand the reports that is not an iPad Air 4 but an iPad Pro mini. It seemed obvious that Apple' next 9.7" tablet would benefit from the Pro's features like the pencil, and maybe even the improved speakers, regardless of whether it's called Air or Pro.

Unless they're bifurcating the lineup and we'll have a Pro Mini and also an Air 4.

That wouldn't make sense to me.

I agree (except that it would be the Air 3 not 4 if it was succeeding the current one). Regardless of what it's called, I would buy it if it went up to 256GB from 128GB -- otherwise as much as I like the pencil, I can't justify upgrading my much loved and constantly used iPad Air 2 (I went from the original iPad, to the iPad(3) - the first retina to the way lighter and faster iPad Air 2. And believe it or not my two old iPads are still in use by friends/family.

I've since read speculation that Apple will bifurcate the iPad line and sell 9.7" Pro and Air (non-Pro) models. I still think that's a silly idea, but we'll see.

According to the latest rumor the sizes of the new 9.7" iPadPro will be 32 or 128GB - no 256GB, so, if true, I'll be waiting until the next release when capacities hopefully do go up.

I respect your decision Ted but I don't agree with it at all. It's the same as the nutters who want to have their entire music collection on one device or they won't buy it. You would honestly decide against buying a device that you would ostensibly otherwise love because it doesn't come with the ability to put more stuff on it than any other portable device on the market does already.

Supposedly Apple is keeping the iPad Air 2 at $499 and the new iPad Pro 9.7in will start at $599. That means, if I do my math right, that at this time next year Apple could be selling at 2.5 year old iPad. Ouch...

I see Best Buy has the Mini 4 at $299 - that looks like a heck of a buy right now...

I don't know what to expect from the "Pro" 9.7" iPad. But in the iPad Air 2's defense, it was over-designed at launch and is still very nice. Day to day use, I can't tell much difference in speed between it and my iPhone 6s (which has a generation faster CPU).

I bought an Air 2 for my Mom a week ago for $399 and yeah, it's a fine device. That vibrating you feel when playing music is a bit annoying but not the end of the world. It feels like with both iPads and iPhones that there's only so many hardware upgrades they'll be able to make to really make a difference year to year...
