Gleeson had a great year indeed. All three performances were so unique. I've become a big fan.

Just saw Room.

A powerful, unique film with two amazing performances. Brie Larson is amazing as Joy and rightfully got an Oscar nomination. Equally amazing is little Jacob Tremblay as Jack who sadly did NOT get an Oscar nom. A worthy Best Picture nominee.

And while the subject matter is heavy, in my opinion the film is not dark and those who are wary of seeing it for fear of it being too depressing are denying themselves of a unique moviegoing experience.

Well the field is wide open again as Spotlight won the ensemble award at last nights SAG awards. I don't recall a tighter Best Picture race than this one.

I wouldn't be that surprised if Bridge Of Spies wins. It's not the best of the nominees (not that that's really an issue) but between there not really being a major front runner and the combo of Spielberg and Hanks, I could see it happening.

To be honest, I think I'll be ok with any film winning as they range from good (Spotlight) to great (Mad Max Fury Road and Brooklyn).

Actually the smart money has been on Spotlight winning Best Picture for a while now. SAG just confirmed what we already knew.

Yeah, I've got my preferences but I'm not going to be too bothered if any of them win.
I know what you mean Travis. I still think The Revenant and The Big Short have the best shots at winning BP. They have had the most momentum. Spotlight had lost a lot of steam lately and needed to win last night to stay in the race. The Revenant was released too late to be eligible for the SAG award so it may have been a different story if it was in the mix. A real indicator will be the DGA awards. Which ever director wins, his film will be the new front runner.

Good analysis of the SAG awards and its potential impact on the Oscars. From Deadline

"
The bigger question on everyone’s mind is what does Spotlight’s Ensemble Cast win mean for its Oscar Best Picture chances? This was a must win for that Open Road indie as it was losing big momentum after losses at the Golden Globes and last week at the predictive Producers Guild Awards which haven’t been wrong in eight years and chose rival The Big Short, which really could have picked up speed with this SAG win. It wasn’t to be and the race for the Best Picture Oscar remains about as wide open as it has ever been at this point in the game.

Right from the beginning it was felt that if there was one award Spotlight could easily win, it was SAG’s Cast honor. This group is a true acting ensemble and the real life people they play are a true journalistic ensemble. However it seemed with its large big name cast and growing big ‘Mo The Big Short was capable of pulling off a mild upset. Both films sent DVD screeners to the entire SAG-AFTRA membership, which is well into six figures. So check this statistic out: With six, often predictive, groups having selected their “Best Picture” choices, six different movies lay claim to them. The National Board Of Review kicked things

off with Mad Max: Fury Road, the New York Film Critics went for Carol, the Globes split their two Best Pic categories between The Revenant and The Martian, Critics’ Choice Awards went for Spotlight, and PGA was in The Big Short camp.

Now SAG has thrown a lifeline to Spotlight with a win for its cast, even though the guild repeatedly says they don’t look at it as a “Best Picture” prize. Pundits do, and SAG despite their crazy voting dates (final balloting spanned from December 16 through yesterday) has a pretty decent track record in foretelling the ways the Oscar winds may be blowing. With last night’s ACE Eddie wins for Mad Max in drama and Big Short in comedy the race continues to get even more muddled. Next weekend’s DGA awards are taking on even greater importance than usual where any one of those five nominees (Revenant, Mad Max, Big Short, Spotlight and even Martian’s Oscar-snubbed Ridley Scott) could win. There is a legitimate scenario for each."

I've viewed all the nominees in all the categories except for one feature-length documentary (The Look of Killing); and one animated feature (Boy and His World). I have seen Mustang and Son of Saul from the Foreign Film category. I don't count the Original Song category. Later this month I'll see all the nominated short documentaries and animated shorts. And I'm done. One of my best years by Oscar time.

The true front runner will be known tonight as the DGA award will be given out. I'm pulling for George Miller of course. ;)

Haven't seen any of the films yet. Mad Max Fury Road is on the DVR, seeing "The Martian" in a few hours, but haven't been to a theatre since seeing Gladiator in 2000 while in Chicago.

People are just so rude and annoying, I'll wait until it hits Redbox or HBO and enjoy it with polite friends. Haven't even bought a movie since Avatar.

Not paying $15, then $10 for popcorn and a soda. Wait a few months and prices really drop.

Sorry to be so negative, the SAG awards and the Oscars are really just celebrities rewarding each other. Shows where we, the people, the customers decide things are much more meaningful.

To me nothing equals seeing a great film on a huge screen with great sound and an enthusiastic crowd. Nothing. No home theater can equal that.

But I know what you mean Stan. Some people can be rude in theaters. I usually go to matinees when the prices are cheaper and the crowds are friendlier.

If this works, this will be my first successful multi-quote post in the new forum! Fingers crossed! :)

Stan, I totally understand where you're coming from. But I fall squarely into Tino's camp, even though I feel that the movie watching experience in public has gotten worse every year. Prices keep going up, screen sizes and projection quality goes down for all but the most premium priced tickets, and people just don't know how to behave anymore. I don't think it's limited to a particular age group or gender. I wonder if it's just that movies are now another commodity and not "special" in the way they used to be -- with multiple showings on multiple screens per day, titles hitting disc mere months after theatrical release, and huge numbers of movies available digitally at a touch of a button -- if all of that has made a majority value the experience of seeing something less than they used to. My strategy for avoiding terrible crowds is a little different from Tino's - I try to see a new release movie the very first showing possible, which is often a Thursday night screening in advance of the Friday opening, and generally at the most "premium" showing available, usually IMAX when possible. I think the combination of it being the first night, where fans have bought their tickets in advance and have been waiting months or years for the movie, combined with the extra price, tends to limit the number of people who are just there to hang out and not watch the movie. It's by no means a perfect system, but that's where I've had the best results.

I've noticed that some ballparks have implemented a text system to report disruptive patrons, so you don't have to miss part of the game by getting out of your seat in search of a security guard. I hate that it's becoming necessary, but I'm starting to think theaters should do this. Each screen would have a code, and if your showing of "The Martian" in Auditorium 12 was being disrupted, you'd simply text AUD12 to a number, and someone would come and handle the situation. I've also heard of some concert venues that have given out cell phone locks prior to the start of the show - basically before you enter, the usher hands you a small pouch that your phone fits into, and the venue locks the pouch so you can't open it. The phone remains on (in silent mode), but if you get a call or a text, you will still feel the phone vibrate. If you're someone who can't wait until the end of the event to respond, you simply walk outside of the screening room or auditorium, and once the pouch is outside of the sensor area, it unlocks and you can use your phone normally. I'm really sad that we've gotten to a point as a society that we need these things, but I would definitely be more likely to go to a venue that utilized systems like those. The Alamo Drafthouse chain of theaters is supposedly very aggressive about removing disruptive patrons; if they opened one of those near me, I'd give them a shot too.

I just don't want to give people an excuse to use their cell phones in any capacity during the movie. The light immediately takes me out of the movie.

Well The Revenant is now the the front runner as Inarritu Won the DGA award for directing. But anything can still happen. The Big Short's PGA award still gives it a really good chance. Spotlight, despite its SAG ensemble award, I would say is third. Still hoping for a Miller directing upset but it looks like The Revenant is going to take it all.
