In the bigger pictures, though, I'm still a little perplexed and also a little depressed that music labels in Japan and the U.K., and now DVD/BR labels in Germany, France and Spain demonstrate a reverence for America's cultural heritage that exceeds companies actually based in America.

Perhaps the movie buying public in those countries respect America's cultural heritage more than American movie buyers do.

That *does* seem to be the case.

I know, of course, that the economy is now a "global economy", and by our presence in this thread, most of us have probably announced our familiarity with purchases made outside of our home countries.

It is vice versa.

Many of the German classics from the silent and early sound era were released in Japan, the UK and/or the US way before Germany.

And that was on DVD as well as on Blu-ray.

So, I know what it feels like. ;)

This reminds me of something.

When I was a young kid growing up in Hong Kong, my parents would often take me to see western movies on the big screen, including reruns of James Bond, Hammer horror (that left me spooked for life, LOL), various Arabian Nights sort flicks including the most impressing Thief of Bagdad, and even the 1976 King Kong, but rarely ever to see Chinese movies. After we immigrated to the US (while I was still in the middle of grade school), we mostly only went to see Chinese flicks (on almost weekly basis) w/ few exceptions like the Star Wars flicks (and of course, James Bond).

I imagine there's something (in human nature) about desiring what you don't or can't easily/normally have that probably drives some of this... and movies are afterall a medium that definitely appeals to that aspect of our human nature...

Of course, in my specific case, it also had something to do w/ my parents wanting to keep us exposed and connected to Chinese culture after moving here, but that wouldn't really explain our movie-going tendencies back in Hong Kong...

The 76 King Kong showed all the time on the two English language TV stations in HK when I lived there in the late 80s.

I don't recall anybody mentioning it before, so I guess this may be good news for some... Explosive Media will be releasing blu-ray versions of Budd Boetticher's Comanche Station, Andre DeToth's Stranger Wore a Gun (not 3D, unfortunately), and Tony Mann's The Last Frontier early next year. All of them are Sony-Columbia titles, but considering its previous western releases (Fort Massacre, Backlash, Gunman's Walk) this company should have deals with MGM and Universal, too...

It seems that this has not been announced anywhere nor is any of these titles available for preorder or on their website.

Did you get that information from Explosive Media directly?

OK, I called them and they are scheduled to come out this year. Everybody who is interested in when that will be can sign up for their newsletter at the bottom of their website: http://www.explosive-media.com/

Can anyone vouch for the quality of the German Blu of BLACK ROBE (1991) or refer me to a substantial review of it? I haven't been able to find anything out about it and the Amazon.de reviews all seem to be about the movie or the DVD, as usual.

I love this film for its accurate history and unflinching portrayal of it. As far as movies go about Native American culture, DANCES WITH WOLVES was a Mother Goose nursery rhyme compared to BLACK ROBE.

I have seen one favorable review even though it is only 1080i 50. Check this thread, I am pretty sure it is the same master they are talking about:

Thank you so much, Oliver. I even posted in that thread you linked to, but obviously I never followed it up to see the comments on the Blu. I appreciate you finding that.

The price has come down to less than 7 Euros and I'm thinking of picking it up, but I hope I won't have trouble playing it. I have an all region Sony player that plays Pal DVDs and a two year old TV that has no trouble with Pal playback, but would there be a difference between DVD and BLU PaI playback? I should know this, but essentially I'm a dope.

You should be fine with the player considering it is a region free unit - what would be the point of selling it that way when it cannot play back 1080i 50 content. Plus the investment is very small and if it does not work out you will probably be able to resell the movie on Amazon US for more than you paid :)

I notice that White Feather is coming out at the end of March in Germany. I hope they get the colors right. I'll be checking the reviews on Amazon. The Region 1 DVD did not get the colors right!

It's been on UK TV a few times, it didn't look great, with the colours very faded on some ext. scenes. The Last Wagon on the other hand, looked very nice & rich.

Has anyone here seen the following Blu-ray release?

Dreamscape (Rough Trade/Turbine Medien)
http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B013FO6P4W

I remember being fond of this film in the 80's. It was an early starring role for Dennis Quaid, with backing by Max von Sydow, Christopher Plummer, Eddie Albert and Kate Capshaw (later Mrs Spielberg).

A pre-Inception film focussing on dream intrusion and manipulation, I recall it was a genuinely engaging thriller. It's been a long time though, and I'm not sure it'll have held up with time, but am eager to find out.

I've stayed away from the US Image Entertainment Blu-ray due to the uniform bad-press of its quality.

I've never heard of Rough Trade/Turbine Medien, so am reluctant to pay upwards of 20 Euros for this Blu without an indication of quality. It appears Rough Trade specialises in Anime.

Any comments as to the quality of this release would be much appreciated.

Watched Gunmans Walk tonight. Very good western. Explosive Media does it right. Release is region free. Well worth the purchase! A Man Called Sledge is next.
Yeah, I've watched both of those Blu-ray titles and I have no complaints.

Has anyone ever gone to the trouble of cataloging European Blu-Ray releases of American and British classics, similar to the R1 thread that we have around here? It would be nice to see what English language films are available abroad that aren't available here at home.

And in addition to the usual data that is available in the aforementioned thread, it would be useful to know if a film is exclusive to Europe, if it's region free, if English audio tracks are available (And if subtitles are forced when they're enabled), if the Euro release is superior to the American counterpart for films that are available in both regions, etc.

I asked this in the past without any luck, but perhaps there has been a development and someone has decided to organize information in threads such as this, somewhere?

Amazon.de has a pre-order for a blu ray of Robert Siodmak's 1967 Custer Of The West. It states it's the original extended version in its 2.20 aspect ratio and gives a running time of 141 minutes which sounds about right. The downside is that it's from White Pearl Classics. I only have one disc from them, a DVD of the 1956 Barbara Stanwyck western which is an unexceptional transfer which inexplicably shows the credits in scope before showing the film in a compromised 1.85 aspect ratio. I'll wait on the reviews before buying this one but at least it's anamorphic.

They've also announced a blu ray of the 1953 Mississippi Gambler with Tyrone Power and Piper Laurie.

Koch Media is adding The Glass Key to its Noir Blu-ray line-up. Another teaming of Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd, together with Brian Donlevy under Stuart Heisler's direction. Set for release on April 28:

http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B01BHPUA4W?keywords=der gläserne schlussel&qid=1455047799&ref_=sr_1_fkmr1_1&sr=8-1-fkmr1

On the same day, Koch is also releasing a DVD of Casbah as part of its Film Noir range, starring Yvonne de Carlo, Peter Lorre and Tony Martin. I've never seen it, but with de Carlo and Lorre in the leads, shall pick it up blind:
