First trailer just dropped today:

...Holy shit, that cast.

A Highlander reunion with Christopher Lambert and Clancy Brown and an appearance by Dolph Lundgren? Tilda Fucking Swinton?

If anyone had told me these actors would all eventually appear together in a Coen Brothers movie back in the '90s/'00s, I would've questioned their sanity.

Now I'm questioning mine.

Brolin almost appears to be in a Jon Polito-mode in this. Can't wait.

I saw the trailer last night before Steve Jobs...I hadn't even known it was coming. I'm sold. Went over well with the audience too. There was an audible sigh of disappointment when the release date in February flashed on screen..everyone wanted it sooner.

I know trailers can sometimes promise a lot more than they deliver, but Holy Crackers that looks great.

I think the cast makes sense based on the subject matter. Always look forward to the Coen films. Last month I watched several of their films and Jon Polito was always great in all the films he was in. Wish they had got him in this as well, based on the setting they could have even named his character Lou Breeze.

For all the credit the Coens get for their clever, snappy, incredibly-polished and inventive dialogue (and the credit is well-deserved), I'm especially delighted by the occasional moments where they choose to let the character be momentarily lost for words, and react with some sort of grunt or other semi-verbal noise.

This trailer has two that are already solid gold: Josh Brolin's "Truth... mmmm!" when he's running away from Tilda Swinton's gossip columnist, and George Clooney's "Errrrrr" at the end when he's stuck between responses to the "What's going on?"-question. Both nearly sent me into hysterics.

Moments like that reveal the Coens as the complete and consummate craftsmen that they are: they could give the character something funny to say, but it's even funnier when they don't.

(This is why Burn After Reading is hysterically funny, despite the Washington D.C. thriller-trappings. Little things, like Malkovich's pronunciation of "memoirs.")

Yeah, they definitely reference themselves all the time. Capitol Pictures was the name of the studio in Barton Fink, as well. H.I. McDunnough (Raising Arizona) worked for Hudsucker Industries, Tom Reagan's (Miller's Crossing) apartment building was the Barton Arms, etc.

Looks great. I can't wait to see it.

But when I saw the title of the thread I honestly thought of this movie:

Saw trailers for this late last year and I have been patiently awaiting its theatrical premiere. Looks like a little bit of Big Lebowski meets Raising Arizona meets Hudsucker Proxy. (That's not a bad thing, BTW.)

I read the Coen brothers purposely wanted to avoid the awards season brouhaha so opted to wait until February for the release.

Critic reviews are reasonably good so far (currently 77% at RT), but audience reviews aren't as strong (currently 62% at RT). Even the critics that liked it say it is uneven, contains a lot of unresolved subplots, and, in Coen brothers fashion, ends abruptly (too abruptly). Which leads me to believe it is a movie that I'll enjoy more than my wife.

That said, we are going to see a matinee today! :)

Yeah, this movie is not for everyone. I really enjoyed it and those that are very familiar with the Golden Age of Hollywood will probably appreciate it more than those that lack some of those details from the era. This film played homage to so many of those past events. The humor isn't gut-busting, but was effective with me. The real Eddie Mannix was a unique character. A real Hollywood fixer.

'Hail, Caesar!' isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. The story is rather quirky and it ends all too abruptly. Me, I would have welcomed an additional 15-20 minutes because I really liked the film. I'm not a fan of every Coen brothers film, but this is certainly one I enjoyed.

If you're a fan of the golden age of Hollywood when big studios "owned" the actors and put out lavish productions, then I think you'll find a lot to like in this film. If none of that means anything to you, maybe this isn't the film for you.

The Booth Bijou gives 'Hail, Caesar!' 4 out of 5 stars. With a better ending that wrapped up a few loose ends it probably could have earned a 4.5 or higher.
