I haven't tried using an IR sender, but in a previous theater room I used a Lutron IR switch and it worked great. Added the wow factor inexpensively. Just skimming I'm not sure that the one you linked to was an IR model. I think you would want something more like this one. Keep in mind there are a couple of different versions depending on the wattage and types of lamps you are dimming.

The Lutron switch I linked to is controlled via wi-fi, not IR. So the tablet remote would have an app on it to control the lights.

The Lutron Caseta line of dimmers are not WiFi, but it is radio wireless as you say. It uses some proprietary wireless band/protocol called "clear connect". In order to use the tablet/phone apps you also need a internet gateway device for an additional $70 or so to connect from the internet to the switch.

I am considering one of these for my basement theater but the Pico hand remote would be sufficient for adjusting the lights.

I installed a Caseta dimmer in my basement theater over the weekend. I love it and I highly recommend this dimmer. It works perfectly with the LED bulbs from Phillips and Kree that are installed in the ceiling. I bought the kit that came with the dimmer and a PICO remote. That remote is from the "viewing area" so the lights cam be turned on/off. I also bought another PICO remote with a wall mounting plate. This became the on/off switch for the room by the door. The location of the original bat handle switch, where the dimmer is now installed is a tad inconvenient to get at, so the new remote wall plate allows you to "add a new switch" basically anywhere you want without wires. Total cost for everything about $90 at HD (big orange).
