Xbox 360 backward compatibilty problems?

I just recently got xbox live for the 360 and have now popped in a few of my old games. The problem I'm finding is that Rainbow Six 3 and Halo 1 are in 4x3 not widescreen and I can't figure out why or how to change it. Is this just the way these are programmed for the 360? Just for comparison, Max Payne 2 plays in widescreen and looks great.

Anybody know anything about this??

Thanks.

Halo 1 was 4x3 on the original Xbox also. For a list of games that run 16x9 on the 360, check this out.

If it wasn't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college.

So does this mean that the Xbox 1 would stretch them to fit widescreen TVs but the 360 won't? Just doesn't seem right.

No. With the original Xbox on a widescreen TV the game is displayed in 4x3 format with black bars on the side just like it does on the 360.

Temporarily set your 360 to 480p output if you want widescreen. Your TV must lock at higher resolutions like mine does.

The industry is only enjoyable on the outside looking in...

That's not the point. The games themselves are 4x3 and are meant to be played in that fashion. All you'd be doing is stretching it. Games that show up 16x9 like "Halo 2" are *true* widescreen. You could say the 360 is preserving the OAR of the games.
