Sony Press Conference Announcements

Just finished watching the Pre-E3 Press Conference. I don't have a full list or anything, but here's what's really important:

Controller - looks like PSOne/PS2, except it has "6 degrees of motion" (read: ripped off the idea for physical movement from Nintendo)

Release - Nov. 17 in N. America in 2 models
1) 20 GB HDD - $499
2) 60 GB HDD - $599

There's more announcements, but that's all that really mattered.

Personally, I'm not interested in many of the games, especially not to the tune of $600 (I'll be honest, I'm getting the 60 GB if anything) plus $60 per game. The controller changing back to what it used to be was nice, but the idea ripped from Nintendo is kind of lame on Sony's part.

Re: Sony Press Conference Announcements

I think it's cool that the PS3 will finally be coming out soon, however, I will likely balk at the price. I already own a 360 (and absolutely love it) and the only reason I see a PS3 in my immediate future is for Blu-Ray movie playing capabilities.

Early responces that I've been reading (and mostly agree with) are:
  1. thank goodness the controller is back and its nice to have the motion control feature added
  2. $$$ ouch.... thats pricey.... and I'm not too happy about it
  3. is it really worth $100 for 40Gb?

Well, some people are shelling out $100 for a 20 gig add-on for the 360, so I guess Sony thinks so...

Well, if you bought the thing after the fact then thats true. But the Xbox360 harddrive actually provides further functionality (i.e. some backward compatibility, etc) where as the additional harddrive space on the PS3 doesn't appear to provide anything more than added game save room.

I wonder if the extra space is really going to be utilized by developers. Will you need to delete another game off the system inorder to play the next? If I'm not mistaken FFXI took up just about all the room on the PS2 harddrive. I would hate to be locked down to one or two games because I don't have the necessary harddrive space to add another.

Due to the speed of the Blu-ray drive, I doubt they would really need to cache too much onto the HDD to run games. Also, FFXI was run off the PS2 HDD completely, whereas with the PS3 games would just be cached on it.

Also, as it turns out, the cheaper model of the PS3 loses some functionality, specifically a few ports are lost (like the memory card slots) and wi-fi is lost. There are also fewer ports on either model than were announced a year ago.

Oh.... missed the part about losing the wifi and memory card slots. Thats gives the higher price a little more justification and reason enough IMO to warrent me needing/wanting the $599 unit now. Wifi alone will save me from the wife yelling "pick up that cable" every other day. $100 well spent

Also just read on IGN that the new control is lighter but the reason appears to be because of the loss of feedback/dualshock. IGN also has a nice comparison of the Revolution controller and the PS3 controller here

So much for Sony's prior claim of not releasing two seperate versions of the console...
