[c]Dead and Breakfast (UMD)
Region 1 • Unrated • Dolby Digital • Available Now

[/c]

Anchor Bay heads to the UMD plate and… well, delivers the movie and absolutely nothing more.

Thoughts on the Movie

I will never understand the appeal of horror movies. Oh, I can watch them, have a good time, and forget about it later, but to embrace horror movies and buy them on DVD… no, I don’t think I can do that. What else is a horror movie than a film that gives you some scares, hopefully enough to get your $6 worth at the movies?

When I say that, I don’t include all horror movies. I am specifically talking about the ones with the murderer after all the hot young teens that somehow ended up in the middle of all this. And that is precisely what Dead and Breakfast is.

Not to say it isn’t entertaining. That one guy from Office Space (the neighbor of Peter) is in it, but only for a short while unfortunately. And that other guy that played Bill from Kill Bill is here also, but to call his role a cameo is being extremely generous. The other guys and girls are mostly hit and miss, but that one guy from ER and U-571 is the most entertaining.

I read in one of the synopses from the official site that this film used a record number of gallons of fake blood. Well, hey, gotta be proud of something I guess. To be honest, I did have a nice time watching the film, and it has a great charm of its own (the zombie town isn’t afraid to break into dance), but once is enough for me.

Video Quality

The film is in a 1.85 ratio, and it looks good. It might be an independent film, but the video quality still looks great. I was pleasantly surprised… and most importantly, the black levels are good.

4/5

Audio Quality

The overall volume of the film could be a tad louder, but otherwise is very solid. The music sounds good, and there is good separation between the two audio channels.

3.5/5

Extras

Well… the menu has Play, and… nothing else. Is that even considered a menu? No subs. No extras. No insert (though I like the way they put the poster art inside the UMD case).

While you can find the UMD for relatively cheap, the complete lack of extras is a bit disappointing, to say the least.

0/5

Overall…

I know there are many people who could care less about the extras, and just want to know if the movie looks and sounds good. Well, the movie looks and sounds good, and there are no extras. Proceed with caution.

With all the major studios starting to put bonus features on UMDs, it’s a bit more raking to see this UMD with absolutely nothing else apart from the movie. With that, this gets an average rating.

2.5/5
