Microsoft announces XNA - Future Xbox games to also play on PCs

This sounds like a brilliant move by Microsoft. They've created a unified suite of development tools which are designed to make game development even easier. The tools look extremely promising but what really drew my eye was that the tool makes it possible to develop one release (SKU) that will run on both Xboxes and PCs.

If this thing is adopted by game developers it promises to be a HUGE boon to the Xbox!

Here's one of the links about this new toolset:

XNA (from IGN)

I debated posting this yesterday in software vs. hardware...

It sounds promising.

I think the title of this thread is misleading. I think the whole point of XNA is to make cross platform development easier, not to produce a single game disc that will play on both Xbox and PC.

Agreed Kevin. Extremely misleading.

Actually, I've read several articles which state just that. For example, from the following Video Business article:

Quote:
In the case of similar systems, such as the Xbox and Windows, it would be possible to have a one-disc SKU for both platforms

It is certainly possible that Video Business got it wrong, but that's what the article says.

Send a message via ICQ to Shayne Lebrun
What they might mean is that you can put both the Xbox and the Win32 binaries on one disc, and one copy of all of the art assets and other such data, and Windows will ignore the Xbox executable, the Xbox will ignore the PC executable, and Bob's your uncle.
