Download Links course for 4.99?

New Links 2004 course available ... for $4.99
Microsoft continues its new policy of charging Xbox Live users for new content by sticking a price tag on a new golf game level.
The good news: Links 2004 players can download a whole new level--the picturesque, par 73, 7,263-yard Plantation Course at Kapalua, Hawaii--on Xbox Live.
The bad news: It ain't free.
Following in the footsteps of the fee it charged for "premium content" for MechAssault, Microsoft is asking Links players to reach into their golf pants and pony up $4.99 for the new course. To sweeten the deal, Microsoft is giving a new set of golf clubs and three GPS -enabled Suunto Golf Watches to four lucky U.S. residents who download the game. For more on Links 2004, check out GameSpot's review.

What do you think? Is it worth 5 bucks?

I'm sure many are wondering if you can download new official levels for PC games for free why should you have to pay for new levels in a console game? Not something I'd imagine myself buying unless I was a big fan of the game, and $5 per level is pretty steep.

I don't own Links but I was thinking about getting it, have they even offered any free courses yet? It seems like only a matter of time until almost everything is charged for, which begs the question "What is the XBL yearly fee for then?". If they charge for golf courses, it's a certainty they'll be charging for things like Halo 2 maps.

It pays for the infrastructure. Why would you think the yearly fee has anything to do with providing free downloadable content. What about publishers that aren't Microsoft? How would they benefit from the yearly fee?

Any what infrastructure would that be? A few admin people to punch in account names? I could understand the charge if MS was providing dedicated servers for Live use, but you get nothing. Sure I get dashboard updates and stuff, but my Xbox performs no better due to the new Dashboard.
When games are sold with the promise of downloadable content, they seem to always fail to mention you may have to pay for it, down the road at least. It is like all those old anti-drug ad's you would see. About the dealer offering the first hit for free to get you hooked.
Gates
"Hey Timmy, want this new fancy course for you little golf game"
Timmy
"Wow, that is really cool of you mister Gates"
2 month later....
Gates
"Hey Timmy, you enjoy that new course for Links, how about another"
Timmy
"It was great sir, I would love another one, I will log in and get it right away."
Gates
"Not so fast Timmy, that will be $5.00"
Timmy
"But sir the last one was free, and I already paid $70 for the game."
Gates
"SUCKER, Muhahahaha"

At this point in time, two Xbox titles have pay-to-play downloadable content. Yes, more are coming, but it's not fair to generalise to the extreme you just did.
high resolution ipod featuring dlp hd programming is the best, almost as good as playstation 2 with wega windows media on a super cd! ps2 and tivo do dolby tv with broadband hdtv!

That infrastructure is, holding your stats for all games that support it, your friends list, allowing you to have a single gamertag for all games, allowing friend invites across multiple games, servers hosting DLC (free or premium), servers hosting player ghost's (PGR2), servers hosting XSN leagues, etc. Do you honestly think this is all taking place on a desktop PC and not an enormous server farm?

MS has dedicated servers running for some games, not all. R63, Counterstrike, and UC come to mind.

Did your old Dashboard allow you to chat with your friends without putting in an XBL enable game?

I think it just comes down to that fact that although we were looking forward to consoles getting online, we didn't realize all the costs that would come with it. If it keeps getting more expensive I can't see online play getting anymore popular than it already is.

Well if they continue to nickel and dime people sooner or later it's going to bite them in the ass. Live starter kits are already $70, that's way too much for a lot of people to spend on what is more or less a novilty at this point.
People have become used to downloading stuff for free on Live and now that there's stuff you have to pay extra for, well it's like taking away a crack addict's crack.
I think they should have been charging for it all along or just kept it free because who's to justify what's worth the extra cost? Personally, I won't be buying any of it. I feel that since I've already spent $50 on the game, I shouldn't have to shell out anymore till the sequel. If that means no new content, so be it. I'm not upset over it at all, if that's the way they want to run it, fine. All I want is to just play the games.
