Blowout
I just picked up Blowout today. It really delivers a lot more than I expected from the reviews, especially for the price($10 PS2, $15 Xbox at best buy with GGC coupon).
If you're a fan of games like Contra but didn't like the fact that Shattered Soldier was basically "boss attack" the entire time, this one is for you. It comes through with all the conventional action game cliches, including a hero who smokes cigars while simultaneously offing aliens.
This game got mediocre reviews, but I think it's a very solid entry into the genre. The lighting and pyrotechnics are first class, and the action is so hectic by the third level that you're really fighting for your life. The control is super responsive. The character is fast and you can shoot in any direction regardless of how you're moving. You move with the left stick and adjust your aim with the right, which takes a bit of adjusting but works really well once you get used to it and tune the sensitivity option to your liking.
The lighting and pyrotechnics are first class and a lot more than you'd expect given the price. The two bosses so far have been pretty cool(basically polygon renditions of stuff you'd expect to find in old school shooters). My one gripe is that even playing the Xbox version in 480p, it gets so hectic that it's sometimes hard to spot the biggest threats. I would not recommend playing this on smaller than a 27 inch TV. The game looks like it's going to be a very solid length for a game of this genre and offer a stiff challenge.
