Sometimes the power button under the ejet button works fine but most often it does noting. I often have to unplug the box to get it off.

Is there something wrong with my box or me?

Unless it has developed a consciousness and is now self-aware, it sounds like a definite hardware problem. Perhaps the button just isn't making contact with the switch. If MS wants to charge an arm and a leg for repairs, I'd try a local electronics repair shop. It might just be a simple mechanical fix that they can perform for a few bucks.
