Smallville Season 8: Renewed by CW
Ain't it Cool.com is reporting that CW has renewed Smallville for an Eighth Season. This is awesome news considering that this current season was shortened by the writer's strike. However, I hope that CW doesn't keep the series going on indefinitely. The producers are going to have to end the series at some point, or change the name of the series and have a type of "Superman: Year 1" mini series event capping off the end of the series.
Anyone else excited by this news?

Re: Smallville Season 8: Renewed by CW
Its renewal depends on a few factors. Just because the show's been renewed doesn't mean that all of the actors will come back. Specifically, Michael Rosenbaum has hinted that seven will be the end for him. Now, they can throw money at him to get him back, but if he leaves there will be a large hole in the show.
Although, even if he comes back the show's gone in some pretty poor directions of late (specifically bringing Jimmy Olsen on so early) and their insistence to continually hit the whole Clark and Lana romance which reached a point of fatigue three years ago.
"If you write a story about a soldier going AWOL and kidnapping a pregnant woman and finally shooting her in the head, it's called searingly realistic, even though it's never happened in the history of mankind. Whereas if you write about two people falling in love, which happens about a million times a day all over the world, for some reason or another, you're accused of writing something unrealistic and sentimental."

I know all about that. I always check out the Smallville website:
KryptonSite: Your Source For "Smallville" News And Information
They report on everything and the eighth season is not dependent on Michael Rosenbaum's return. They could actually pull it off with John Glover as the chief protagonist.

The CW's Official Description (Added 2/29/08): LIONEL KIDNAPS CLARK — Lionel (John Glover) arranges to have Clark (Tom Welling) kidnapped and held in a kryptonite-lined cell at a Luthorcorp facility. After Chloe (Allison Mack) and Lana (Kristin Kreuk) find a military electric probe at the farm, they confront Lionel, who throws suspicion onto Lex (Michael Rosenbaum). Chloe and Lana take Kara (Laura Vandervoort) to the Fortress and beg Jor-El to restore her memory as she is the only one who can save Clark.
UPDATED 2/29/08: Yes, that write-up above confirms all suspicions - The Magnificent B. - Bad Lionel - is BACK!

Re: Smallville Season 8: Renewed by CW
Yes, they could pull it off, but my excitement for the season would be nil. Lionel has been so neutered by the writers the last few seasons that he could never be a sufficient enough antagonist. For two years now they've spun that character around to be on Clark's side. Without Lex, they'd have to create a new villain and lose the momentum of that conflicted relationship with Clark they've been building for seven years.
If Rosenbaum refuses to return, they should go ahead and end the show.

Re: Smallville Season 8: Renewed by CW
I just want them to hurry up and get on with it, I've screamed that alot during the shows this year, get a direction and stick with it, start moving Clark to training and his eventual leaving of Smallville and his friends. Hell Green Arrown can handle things there untill he moves to Seattle.

No, in fact this is horrible news IMO. The fact that there is no end in sight is what is killing this show.
Also, if Lex doesn't come back for season 8 then neither will I. Without Lex it just wouldn't even remotely be Superman. Of course, the writers seem to be working very hard at keeping Superman out of this show. It wouldn't surprise me at this point if the final episode (one day) will have Clark losing his powers and live happily ever after with Lana. Well, until they break up again and then get back together, again, a few years later... then break up and get back together... then...(you get the picture).
No Lex = No watch (for me at least).

I just hope the show is allowed to end before Tom Welling enters his forties....

Re: Smallville Season 8: Renewed by CW
CW won't cancel the series until they have another hit show to replace it. JUst that Smallville is one of those shows that, while it has a few good standout episodes, most of them seem like just filler material.

Could be the best thing to happen to the show. Shake it up! Get something happening. I know Lex is a big part of the show, but him and Clark is part of what's getting stale. Have him move on to other things that get him mentioned every few episodes while Clark focuses on becoming Superman.

Well Clark just turned 20 on February 29.
In the comics Superman is perpetually 29 years old.
So Smallville still has 9 years to go before Clark knits himself a 1920's strongman outfit out of old blankets.
I'd hate to see them mess with continuity by having him become Superman so much earlier.
