Hacked movie on HD station....WTF?????

I was scanning around my new DirecTV High Definition stations, and came across a movie on SpikeHD this weekend. They were showing Braham Stokers Dracula.....the hacked in butchered version with black bars on either side. I'm sure that there is a version of that movie available in OAR for their high def station.....

What good is a high def channel that shows hacked movies?

Rant off....

Re: Hacked movie on HD station....WTF?????

Not all HD channels are as good as others. Sounds like Spike is in the same class as TNT. I don't have SpikeHD, but in TNT's case, they basically run the same thing on their HD channel as they are running at the same time on their SD channel. So, if it's a P&S movie, it'll be a stretched P&S on the HD feed. If it's a 4x3 tv show, it'll be a 4x3 show stretched on the HD feed. There are rare exceptions to this, such as when they showed a Stephen King miniseries in true HD a little while back.

I always say it but I don't get why people expect channels that played MAR movies on their SD channel to change just because they started an HD channel.

Whether it's SD or HD, filling the screen is the norm for TV. Unfortunately.

"it'll be a stretched P&S on the HD feed."....

At least it wasn't stretched...that would even be worse.

The center of the screen (between the left and right black bars) was very clear....I guess it was OAR for a pan and scan.......??????
(Yea - that make no since to me either....)

This was not what I expected for a movie on a high def station....

At least their new auto shows are actually in high def and look great...

Hacked normally means someone got unauthorized access- not sure what you mean by it here.

I think that's true of most HD stations, but there are a few exceptions. I'm pretty sure Universal HD plays OAR all the time. I know when they first started airing Northern Exposure, they were stretching it to 16x9, but they quickly dropped that and ran it 4x3 (I say "ran," because I haven't seen it on in a while, so they may no longer air it). I watched Cliffhanger the other day on UniHD, and it was in OAR.

Spike TV isnt HD yet. Yes they advertise that they are but NONE of their programming is true HD. None of their CSI's or UFC shows are in HD. Or anything for that matter. They put the side black bars for everything on their HD ch. The only good thing that did come from when they switched to "HD" is that the shows do actually look better on my widescreen, much clearer picture than their SD ch, but not HD yet.

And that's quite a bit different from TNT. A substantial amount of programming on TNT is in HD; very little is pillar-boxed. Over time, I'm sure Spike will reach that level as well.

"NONE of their programming is true HD"

As I said earlier, their weekend "Powerblock" of car shows are now being shot in HD. If they show a repeat from an earlier year, it gets pill boxed, but all of the new shows from this year are in HD, and look great....

That is why I was so surprised when this weekend’s movies were 4x3 with side bars...

They have a preview of the shows here - you can see the 16x9 image

[rant on]
This is the reason I don't want to buy HD progamming, yet. It's bad enough to pay for HBO, etc. and not get OAR movies (most of the time). Also with Dish Network the program guide doesn't tell you if a movie is OAR or not. With most major retailers selling widescreen TVs almost exclusively, when will the TV stations catch up? Their argument is that people will be upset by the "black bars" on the top and bottom of their screens. What about everyone who is upset about black bars at the sides.

I've seen stuff on the high def channels that were stretched as well, which is just as bad.

My DVD Collection
I met him, fifteen years ago. I was told there was nothing left. No reason, no conscience, no understanding; even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, good or evil, right or wrong. I met this six-year-old child, with this blind, pale, emotionless face and, the blackest eyes... the Devil's eyes! I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up for I realized what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply... evil! - Dr Sam Loomis(Halloween)

Damn you Mop N Glo! - Stewie (Family Guy)

Re: Hacked movie on HD station....WTF?????

In the end, it's all up to the viewers. As long as enough viewers respond positively to what they're doing, they'll continue to do it. What is really difficult is that the "I want the program to fill my screen" folks outnumber the "I want the program presented OAR" folks, I'm guessing by 10 to 1 right now.

And a substantial amount of programming on TNT is stretched. They are especially fond of using what I like to call the "fisheye lens stretch." Absolutely terrible looking.
