Re: American Idol - Season 7

I missed most of it due to the bizarre Celtics/ Cavs game.

They announced that David C. was doing Baba O'Reilly, and I thought "this could be one of the great Idol performances." Sadly, that arrangement sucked. It was probably the biggest Idol-edit travesty since Innuendo. I wish they'd let these kids sing a whole song (or at least a 4-minute rendition of one) when they get down to the final few.

Then Castro comes on to sing Mr. Tambourine Man, and I thought "PLEASE GOD, let him do the Shatner version!" To my surprise, he sounded OK. But only for 15 seconds, until he forgot the words.

When David A. said he was going to sing Love Me Tender, I thought "Hm, should I point the gun at my left temple or my right temple?"

When Syesha came out, I thought -- well, I won't repeat it, but y'all can guess. She was kinda shouty though.

(Don't worry John Swarce - you get to keep the discs. Adam told me he's mailing them out this week.)

Thanks for the laugh, Robert!
The thought did cross my mind that if Jason stayed, I would have to return the DVD's...either that or I would be sent previously viewed copies of Battleground: Earth, Glitter and Gigli instead!

Totally agree with you there. To me, one of the biggest problems with the past two weeks is that they're not allowing the contestants to sing longer arrangements or the entire song. Instead, they're forced to sing horrifically bad arrangements that absolutely destroy the spirit of the songs just so they can cram in two songs per person. Maybe the results would have been different if Syesha was allowed to sing most, if not all of Proud Mary. By condensing it to a short, rushed version, it ended up sounding like a confusing mess. Same with Cook and Baba O'Riley. My god, there's a song that pretty much requires performing in its entirety. Every time the contestants sing these pathetically short arrangements, I'm left to say "that's it?"

On another note, Paula was just irritating the hell out of me with her sugar coating of Jason Castro's brutal performances. Come on, he sucked so much there is no way anyone could justify defending those performances, yet there Paula was trying her best to put a misguided spin them. Ugh. Take another valium and lie down already.

The irony this season is that the final 12 were supposedly the most talented group of kids they've ever had, which I would actually agree with. Yet, now that it's down close to the finals, instead of getting better and better, everyone seems to be regressing due to ridiculous limits the producers of the show seem to be putting on them. I wonder it that sort of explains David Cook's look of disdainful boredom.

Speaking of confused Idol employees - did anyone catch Ryan's gaffe when he announced "And NOW - Round TWO" after Cook had already done his second song. And calling Rascal Flatts "His Boys" ... like he hangs out with those guys...

Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank You!!

Couldn't even sing the out song - the band was late, more lyric flubs!

It still doesn't rescue the show.

I believe it was "commercial". I think it was just an audio problem, as I can't see a reason not to allow that.

Re: American Idol - Season 7

Well, there is a God.

Jason's exit singing was just as painful to hear as it was last night. Although, I will give him credit for the "I Shot The Tamborine Man" line...that made me laugh. Also laughed as he tried unsuccesfully (three times, I think!) to put his dreads behind his shoulder as he was playing guitar.

I really liked Bo Bice tonight. Good song, a lot of energy, and there, in the background, was David C. thinking, "Damn, I should cover this song for the finals week!"

I even liked Maroon 5 as well, although the falsetto vocals took a bit getting used to.

Re: American Idol - Season 7

Jason knew he was toast (ed) last night. But I must say his goodbye video package was one of the most entertaining in memory and made me smile. He seems like a good kid even though he blew a part of his Reelin' in the Years -- it's "etched UPON my mind" -- not across....

Now the rant...
What's up with the technical side of Idol lately - miscued B roll footage - audio dropouts - poor mixes and tonight's hiss/hum on Bo's mic that Ryan was holding. And Seacrest calling for the booth to "Cue It!" instead of "Roll It!" --- but he probably was subconsciously hoping the package was indeed cued this time...

And WTF was up with tonight's special musical guests? The theme this week was the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame right? Moron Five? I thought we got rid of Blake Whatsizname last year. What's the deal? Were The Who, The Stones, Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Tom Petty, The Eagles, Aerosmith and Van Halen all too busy to show up and play a CLASSIC Rock and Roll Hall of Fame calibre tune? So the producers went with Moron Five??!! Bo Bice I can somewhat understand... as he has ties to Idol and has a new CD coming out. But c'mon now ... Moron Five??? Who are they sleeping with to get on the show ... Seacrest? Thankfully I have :30 skip... on the ReplayTV.
