Re: American Idol - Season 7

I still don't get why the judges keep gushing about Carly.
I've saved 2 performances so far this year (not that I didn't like any others). One is "Carly Smithson - The Shadow Of Your Smile" and the other is "David Archuleta - Imagine". I don't think I'd ever heard The Shadow Of Your Smile before she sang it and I instantly know I've hit something when a person makes me like a song the first time I hear it. I did go back and read Hanson's comments because there are some things I can't hear perfectly and I thought I heard a bit of screaming in her highest of high notes, but the rest sounded like listening to a bell to me. Just whip-crack clear. I didn't see the fuss in her audition, but I did in that performance. I'm not into body art, but she's a favorite of mine so far.

My favorite from a looks standpoint is the little asian girl (can't quite remember her name yet, but it's something like Ratatouille, I think). She is absolutely adorable.
If you ever ask Ramiele Malubay out, please don't call her Ratatouille. I really like her voice so she's another favorite of mine.

> I’m not going to say that David’s reason for skipping ahead to the third verse was a lie

I think it was true & don't buy the argument here about the lyrics. Those lyrics didn't hurt Lennon's career. The song is on the radio all the time with those lyrics & has been covered by many others.

I think most viewers know the contestants don't write the songs & aren't going to hold them responsible for a few words in a song.

Also, you have to realize you don't vote against people on this show, but for them... so anyone offended by David singing some lyrics would have to vote for all 9 other guys to have the effect of voting against him. People who are that offended are probably not watching or voting in the first place.

As a Brit, you'd have to look for the in record stores (imports, 45s and tapes), or hope the radio stations might play songs from the US, though it probably wouldn't be in high rotation.

Why wouldn't UK stations play US bands? Dreamboat Annie was #36 on the charts in the UK, so it wasn't exactly an obscure album. Magic Man was a top 10 hit in the US.

Are there any Brits of a certain age here who care to comment?

In the same vein, I'd probably flunk a test on today's music if I had to identify current songs/bands/singers not in heavy air play, or integrated in popular culture media (TV, films, etc). The older you get, the more you have to work on having a music listening IQ and familiarity with the current musical acts.

Simon's 48. And his father was an EMI Music exec. He lived through those times. He's got no excuse for being so unfamiliar with classic rock.

BTW, EMI owns Capitol. And Capitol put out (the reissue of) Dreamboat Annie. Just sayin'. :p

I'd agree with Patrick's point that one is familiar with the songs one grew up with -- I can identify most 80s songs, down to what year it was released and sometimes roughly how well it did on the UK charts as well. I'm nowhere near as good with 70s music, even though I listen to a lot of it. I'm useless with 90s music.

For Simon, growing up in the UK in the 70s he would be familiar with late 60s and 70s UK music, US acts that were hot in the UK, and not US acts that were not as popular in the UK. And if old photos of Simon are any indication, he would've been the sort that got into the mod stuff, not rock (or for that matter soul). Hence his unfamiliarity with it when it now comes up on AI.

I think that rocker nurse needs to go because her singing is terrible. I am really hoping that she does not turn out to be another Sanjaya, because that was painful. I also noticed tonight that there is a lot of Davids on the show.

My wife is British and she'd never heard the song before either.

Each country has their own hits. A hit over here would not necessarily get much airplay over there. And vice versa.

Take a look at the current UK singles chart and you'll find a lot of bands that don't get airplay in the States.

Incidentally, checking polyhex.com for Magic Man reveals it wasn't a single in the UK

I hope she DOES turn into another Sanjaya. God, this season needs something interesting to happen.

There were three Davids and two Jasons. That means almost half the male contestants in top 24 had the same 2 names. David Hernandez will probably make it to the top 12, which means that half the boys will be named David (Cook and Archuleta are the other two).

I think you underestimate the media's tendency to make mountains out of molehills. Had he sang one of the frist two verses, I guarantee it would be a subject on Fox news, and the local stations would going on about an "American Idol controversy". Guaranteed.

I'll pile on the "Amanda just plain sucks" bandwagon. Her performance Wed. night was horrible, and her short solo at the opening of Thurs. night was even worse. That girl just flat out can't sing.

I have to agree 100% with Hanson on this - the "media" would have been all over that like ugly on a monkey - they love controversy, even if they have to manufacture it.
