Re: The War
I've been waiting for this since I first heard about it. Anyone know if he has an "authority" in the doc like Shelby Foote, or is it just soldiers who were there? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Re: The War
I saw Ken Burns on Keith Olbermann's show the other night talking about this. He said that there would be 'no Shelby Foote' in this one. He interviewed people in 4 different towns in the U.S. and culled it down to 4 individuals stories and memories (1 from each town).

Re: The War
SUrprised that there are no comments on last night's episode yet. I didn't see the whole thing, but I thought it got off to kind of a slow start (kind of like the first few episodes of KB's Baseball)... maybe I was just tired. I'll be watching this whole thing no matter what.

Re: The War
He did a lenghty interview on the local public radio some months ago (one of the 4 soldiers in from around here), and it was broadcast again the other day.
WWII is probably my favorite historical subject but I was wondering why the world needed another doc on the topic. Well the best praise I can give to Burns is that his passion is contagious -- he made me wanna see how this one stood out from the pack.
I will be waiting for the DVDs though.

Re: The War
Saw it last night, thought it was really well done and I learned a lot. They didn't teach a lot of that stuff in school. It was quite engrossing. Some was hard to watch because you never see this stuff.
In my area though, the dialogue was a little out of synch.

Re: The War
They showed some photos and footage I've never seen before (and I've seen a lot of WWII docs) and some of them were extremely gruesome and unsettling, especially some of the photos of the Bataan Death March.

Same here, I thought it was just the local Comcast engineers doing another superb, cough, job.
I thought that this was very well done and look forward to seeing the rest of the episodes. In some ways, it plays like a short story, I found that you really have to pay attention because there are a lot of critical one-liners.
They didn't teach much about the war when I was in school either, but my dad and uncles served in the war, my mom worked in a war-factory, and my aunt was a nurse during the conflict so there was never any shortage of stories about the war in my house.
The kids in school these days are two to four generations removed from the generation that fought the war. Yet, for the same old reasons America's unarguably pivotal role in defeating the Axis Powers in WWII remains the elephant in the room. At the risk of offending our war-time allies' sensibilities, it's time all American's know what this country is capable of when it sets it's mind to it.
Saving Private Ryan did much to bring the war to the attention of younger people, and I hope Ken Burn's newest masterpiece becomes a standard in the classroom.

Re: The War
Slight lip sync issue here too, over-the-air HD. It looks like it was fixed by the middle portion though.
