What a great heroic character arc and death good old Charlie had. Even though I knew it was his destiny to die there and he accepted it, it was quite sad for me to watch and I'll admit it got me misty.
I've always liked Charlie. I know there are some who didn't like him, but I always saw him as a good, kind man who was lead down a shitty path by his brother (who then abandoned him to the addiction he was responsible for). Poor guy was pretty messed up at the time time we first met him, but he scooped himself up and went down the heroic path, though not without a few very human stumbles along the way.
The smile on his face before he drowned almost broke my heart. I'll miss him.
The rescue by Hurley was fantastic!
Mickael is a damn son-of-a-bitch! I hope his grenade killed him, but considering his advanced level of tapping into the Island's healing power, I think there's good chance we'll see the bastard again.
Rousseau meeting her daughter was a very nice moment.
Cool to see Locke being contacted by "Walt" (really some psychic extension of Walt, or a manifestation of smokey, or something else) and nudged back to health and back onto the path he is supposed to follow.
I think that by the end of the show, we'll see that Ben is right in that the Others are "the Good Guys". Not by their actions on the Island, but because of their ultimate goals (though they are using deplorable methods to accomplish their goal, so the title "good guys" will probably always be relative and debatable). It may be that by the end the survivors will understand Ben's motivations, though they'll still hate him for what he's done to them. It may be that he was the one in the casket.
Very, very wild the way the "flashback" turned out to be a "flash forward". I also noticed the razr, and I was trying to think back to if they were available in 2004. I didn't think so, but then I thought that maybe they just came out and the rich doctor had the new cool super expensive phone that not many others have until a year or so later when the price comes down. But it turns out this was the future (relative to 2004), so a fun little clue that was!
Also wild how they really fooled me by referring to Christian Shepard (the prescription and Jack telling his boss to get his father down there). That really cemented that this was a flashback (which was to be expected anyway). But then when we realize it was the future, this pretty much is telling us that Christian Shepard winds up being alive!! Maybe it is still open to interpretation since they didn't have him make an appearance, but I think that is the subtle point they were making.
So the casket? Ben seems likely. But that is based on what we know right now. As the story progresses, it could very well be someone else who would have no one come to their viewing. Maybe Locke? Maybe Sawyer (though probably not, and maybe Sawyer is who Kate is with).
The creators recently said something about how we are getting this part of the story and we have been getting the "back part" of the story, and I think there was some implication that we'd also be getting the future part of the story, so we wouldn't see the whole "big picture" until the end of the show. I remember that comment, but I still didn't see this "flash forward" coming.
So I wonder if they are now going to be giving us more of the future parts of the story? That would definitely be interesting and change the dynamic of the whole "flashback" aspect of the show. I also think I remember the producers indicating something to this effect?
Jack seemed pretty messed up that they made a mistake and shouldn't have left (again indicating that he'll eventually understand Ben's point of view, even if it is after Ben dies). He also seemed to want to get back to the Island pretty bad. It would be wild if as the show goes on, we follow the "present" events leading to their rescue and the future events which follow what happens afterward and the attempts of some to get back. Maybe the show will truly end with them (or some of them) getting
back to the Island. Not off. (Or maybe both happen in the series finale.) Doesn't that cook your noodle!!!
Now these 3 next seasons of only 16 episodes each seems like it will have lots to cover and the situation isn't then "do we really need 3 seasons to finish
this story?" that some have wondered/complained. Maybe it turns out that the story some assumed they were telling is only part of the whole story they plan on telling. Very cool indeed.
The "Golden Pass" that Oceanic gave the crash survivors was amusing.
So
this season finale turned out to be a
GREAT finale to a
GREAT season of television!
People who say there is nothing good on TV are tools.
