The dude's freaking huge. Wouldn't have needed a muscle suit like Routh does. But, I'll stop belaboring that now.
I don't know why people are surprised that Jor-El *is* sadistic. He's actually mellowed out since his first appearance. He's always been portrayed as a sinister figure on this show. Remember how the ship told Clark his destiny was to conquer the Earth?

Hey, maybe they'll kill Pete Ross!

When they got to "I kind of liked being the only one who knew the whole you bit." I thought Clark was going to go "Pete!" and then call and find out he'd passed away. But nope. Can't torture him if that's the case.

From here:
Good joke! Maybe for our next trick we can put some green Kryptonite in the Big S's stocking! With friends like these. . . .
As for the development, I'm not upset about it. It's all in how it is presented. Why should the concept alone be such a big deal?

A poster at the www.kryptonsite.com forum had a interesting theory on who dies....
Quote:
Did anyone else see the similarities between Hidden and in the comics, after Superman died? In the comics, the Eradicator sacraficed himself to revive and empower Clark/Superman after his death. In Hidden, Jor-El did. With Brainiac coming later in the season, Jor-El is more expendable then we all thought he was. I think he's gone, a father making the supreme sacrafice for his son. When he said that someone Clark loved must die to save him, he was talking about himself. After all, it wasn't until after this that Lionel was completely restored in character. Had Jor-El temporarily abandoned Lionel's body, he should have been re-"Waldenized".
Besides, the "return by sunset" deal was instantaneous. If Jor-El wanted Jonathan or Chloe or Lana to die to save Clark, then Jonathan or Chloe or Lana would have already died.
As to why Jor-El would sacrafice himself now instead of when he knows Clark will be more mature, he didn't have a choice. Clark getting his life and powers back any other way would be like Supergirl or Steel bringing Clark/Superman back to life and loading him with solar energy after he died in the comics.
If Jor-El had any choice at all, he would take the other choice so he could still prepare Clark for Brainiac. But if Clark can learn the Krypton language so quickly, maybe Jor-El prepared Clark in some way as he gave him his powers and life. After all, with Brainiac coming to town, Clark might not trust the info at the FOS.

Bring back John Doe! Or at least resolve the cliff-hanger with a 2hr movie or as an extra on a dvd release.

I've checked out eps 2 and 3 as well. Outside of the typical Smallville nonsense like the
Someone has been watching a bit too much 24 lately.
In 4 years of whining and moaning about his plight, I have never felt so sorry about Clark as I did in the last scene of the episode. Perhaps it's the acting, perhaps the make up or even the script/direction (that scene went on for an unusual amount of time with little dialogue on Clark's side) but for once, his pain and despair came through like never before.
Also is this dude getting more and more buff or what?
