It sure is. But, let's just hope for the best.

the WB seems to understand when a show means something to it's dedicated fans and doesn't keep it's hair-trigger finger on the cancel button at all times like FOX does.

Yeah, like they did with Angel.

Angel ran for five years. That's hardly an example of the network being ready to cancel at the drop of a hat.

Kind of surprised to see this enthusiasm for the new title sequence. I really liked the old one, showing with the locations what the people symbolized and contributed to Clark's development.

This is why we are stuck with the Nielsens for the foreseeable future.

I don't know if it's common knowledge around here but Neilsen's now include PVR devices in their books; started around the first of the year. They are basically counted the same as live viewing. The devices are not restricted to Tivo but include any Hard Disk or DVD recorder. VCR's are relegated to a second class status, mostly archiving, not live viewing. Of course they may or may not actually use the data collected.

I've been in the TV/VCR repair business for over 30 years and have noticed that the rise of satellite and digital cable (both require set-top-boxes) have dramatically altered timeshifting. It used to be that people couldn't figure out how to record around premium channels but had mastered analog (cable and OTA) timeshifting and archiving; now they are tied to a box and can't figure out how to use their VCR's for anything but recording what they are watching. "We" may have figured it out but the "Average Joe" is clueless. Plus, until the dual tuner devices started showing up, it required some technical ability.

I like the direction this episode put the season in. Hopefully we will see some longer story arcs and not so many one time only freak of the weeks.

It's probably mainly the newness factor. It's like how it was exciting when DS9 changed their ts a bit when the Defiant came along. It wasn't a substantial improvement, but it was something new to look at.

The phantom zone bit was a little cheesy, especially the effects, but I did like the CGI Fortress of Solitude, though it was pretty obvious, given the budget of the show, it was acceptable.
Same here. On TV, if the scene itself is working, I'm willing to cut the F/X some slack. The scene itself was cool enough that the effects, while noticably less than 100%, got the job done.

I really appreciate the fact that neither the Phantom Zone nor the Fortress of Solitude were monkeyed around with from the films, a definite plus IMO.
It was stange to see the show go so retro all of a sudden, but it worked for me since I love the original. The only thing that was strange was that when they villains get trapped in the phantom zone, the background in the glass was black. I thought it would be transparent to the room behind them.

The confession scene between Clark and Chloe is the highlight of the night, I knew that he would own up to her about his powers, but to spill the beans and tell her everything was quite unexpected and a big surprise.
I thought they missed an opportunity here. The scene was really strong as it was, but I would have liked a Pete mention. It would have made Chloe's instant acceptance even more powerful in contrast to his freak out.[quote]I had to do a double take when Lionel said "The desiples of Zod..." ZOD! Me too! Definitely the episode's "What that Fuck?!?" moment.

Also, if that was supposed to be Ursa and Non, they went out like pusses, too easily IMO.
Something tells me they're going to be coming back...[quote]Now, his mere presance on-screen brings with it an uneasy feeling of subtle dread that I must applaud the show for creating slowly over the past 4 seasons. The actual transformation only started towards the end of last season. But I agree, the build-up, the revealing of his many character failings, have made the transformation much more believable. When Lex was the one who found Lana, I actually thought she was in danger. That's real drama.

In case you missed it, you can see one of the shots of a person floating at the time Krypton's destruction from the 1978 film among the images for a brief moment.
I caught that too! A really nice moment[quote]My only caveat is Clark losing his powers...again. This has been overdone, IMO, and really it's rather dumb. But that aside, good things ahead. My main problem with it was that his previous loss of powers wasn't even acknowledged. He gives the same reasons why it will be a good thing, and I'm thinking to myself, "Hello! The world just almost fell fucking apart! And don't you remember all the shit that came down with the lightning transference incident?" Ideally, the characters should be growing. The weakest moment of the episode, in my opinion.

I can't say I'm surprised by the Clark/Lana love interest gaining steam.. but it will be interesting to see whether clark fesses up to all his secrets or not. My guess, he doesn't .. and they break up again. But, who knows.. maybe they'll surprise me.
That would be the only way to make that tired storyline interesting for me, so I hope so...

regarding Chloe freezing in the FOS, I liked that that happened because it shows that she is a human being who can't withstand those kinds of temperatures
Me too! It was surprisingly perceptive for this show.

I feel the same way. This show has more of a down-home feel to it, and the new credits are almost excessively sophisticated.

In regards to Clark and Lana, their whole time together has an undercurrent of futility about it because we all know that it isn't meant to be. The important distinction here is that THEY don't know what the future holds for them, we do, but they don't, so I can excuse them pursuing their relationship.

But having said that, I can't wait until the moment comes when Clark realizes that that sick feeling in his stomach whenever he's around Lois isn't from aggravation...it's love.

I also know where Clark is coming from about his powers being gone, we all have moments in our lives when we know that there isn't a damn thing that we can do about a given situation and so we try to see the glass half full, and that's all he was doing...his powers are gone, he can't get them back, life on the Kent farm goes on, beginning with the house.

And yes indeed, I too felt a wiff of fear for Lana when Lex found her on the road, very unsettling, and previously when he awoke in the cave and called out for Chloe "Chloe! Where'd ya' go, Chloe?" in a manner that indicated that he would harm her if he found her. In many ways, probably because the show has more time to do so, Lex's fall towards the darkness rivals even that of Anakin's in the Star Wars prequels!

Lastly, I was mistaken about that shot of Clark flying through space towards the Earth, it's not from season 5, but was actually from the first ep of season 4.
