Viacom, Comcast Sign Deal for Multiyear TV Distribution
NEW YORK -- Viacom Inc. (NYSE:VIA - News) and Comcast Corp. (NasdaqNM:CMCSA - News) , two behemoths of the television industry, signed a groundbreaking agreement guaranteeing that Viacom's channels will continue to be carried on Comcast's cable-TV systems for at least five more years, Friday's Wall Street Journal reported, citing executives on both sides.
The agreement is one of the biggest of its kind, reflecting the impact of consolidation among cable-TV operators and media companies like Viacom, which own TV channels carried on cable systems. The pact covers almost all of Viacom's channels, including CBS, MTV, Nickelodeon, VH-1, Spike, BET and Comedy Central. Viacom's pay-movie network Showtime isn't covered because it signed a similar accord with Comcast recently. In the past, Viacom's different divisions would have negotiated several such agreements at different times. Negotiating an overall deal increases Viacom's leverage.
Comcast's acquisition of AT&T Corp. (NYSE:T - News)'s cable system a year ago made Comcast the nation's biggest cable operator, with more than 21 million subscribers. Since then, Comcast has been aggressively trying to lower its programming costs, mostly the fees it pays to carry cable channels. As a result it has had tense negotiations with several cable channels. Those most feeling the brunt of Comcast's pressure have been channels that aren't part of big media conglomerates and thus lack bargaining leverage.
