ABC NHL Hockey and HDTV

t sometimes there is a significant downgrade in picture (replays, certain angles, etc.). I am assuming these pictures are beiaken from a non-HDTV camera. My question is, how come these pictures are still in widescreen (16x9)?

The pictures that are from non-HDTV cameras have sort of orange bars on the sides with ABC logos on them. At least that is the way I see them in the US. Maybe ABC Canada is matteing the 4:3 images instead. Anyone else not see the orange bars with the logos on the sides of the 4:3 picture?

If I am not mistaken, those angles (like the overhead) are SD cameras that have been up-converted.
