Re: Testy Area 51

Well those two guys want to kill each other really badly and you see the reason why in a flashback later on. It gets sort of mystical and hallucinatory near the end when the two foes meet Anjelica Houston playing a mysterious Madame who may or may not be an emissary from... beyond... [bites fist]

Re: Testy Area 51

I'm watching Nothing Sacred a classic 1937 comedy in Technicolor! Colour movies were still in their infancy than and the film looks a little too garish, almost a 3D effect in places. Anyway I had to giggle when Fredric March and Carole Lombard go to a show and the master of ceremonies introduces one female performer with the words - "Katinka! Who saved Holland by putting her finger in the dyke. Show them the finger babe." [STOP IT STEVE!]

Re: Testy Area 51

OK, I took some vacation hours from work to go catch a matinee of "Eastern Promises" today. I liked it, and the violence wasn't TOO bad.
Spoiler:
I could have done without the knife in the eye.
A lot more sharp objects than I'd like (why can't they just shoot each other?). I know, I know -- that's not personal enough.

I really liked Viggo in the role. Viggo looks like a rather intense, serious guy, but he's pretty funny -- he was on David Letterman joking about how after thinking about it, maybe he SHOULDN'T have done the nude fight scene.

The movie left me with a "Is that it??!?!!?" reaction, however. The time went by so quickly, and you wanted to see more of the story. What could have been a more fully-developed epic story with more in-depth characterizations ended up feeling like it just skimmed the surface. It's a backhanded compliment I guess in that it was successful in making you want to know more about these characters.

Re: Testy Area 51

Elizabeth, I saw it today as well. I liked it a lot, but yeah, that was some intense violence. I thought this one was better than A History of Violins. I agree that the ending seems to leave things hanging, even though the main plot points are all resolved. I think Cronenberg has come up a bit short on story in these last two movies, although he's casting terrific actors and getting great performances from them. Viggo in both movies, Maria Bello and William Hurt and Ed Harris in History, Armin Mueller-Stahl and Naomi Watts in Eastern Promises...all excellent.

Re: Testy Area 51

I've just been to see In the Shadow of the Moon.

If you go to one theatrical film this year, let this be it. Is that too strong a recommendation for a documentary cobbled together mostly from archival 8mm and 16mm footage, and a lot of talking-head shots framed a little too close for comfort? I think not. Not when there are some moments as downright beautiful as in this film, and not when the subject is the greatest of all achievements of mankind down to the present day.

And they've grown so old!

Re: Testy Area 51

Despite being a Paul Haggis fan ("EZ Streets" is some of the best television of the last 15 years), I wasn't too eager to see "In the Valley of Elah". But am I glad I decided to see it today! What an excellent performance by Tommy Lee Jones! The entire film was well cast, down to the smaller roles.

Yes, the final image is hamfisted, but it doesn't negate what came before. While others may take some kind of issue with its anti-iraq stance, I don't really care about that -- to me, it's just a hearbreaking story of loss and the side effects of war -- any war.

[leaps into frame] Parker?

We're not in Kansas anymore...

New forum design? Looks a little retro...

Everything seems to be in place.

I'll have another look around.... [wanders off]

Retro? this is the crazy black look I've been talking about for ages.

I'm totally baffled. I'm going to pay attention to my movie again.

Apart from colour and design it's still the same old forum, now we get these little envelopes on the side of each topic and if you've posted in that thread it'll tell you how many posts you have in it. It was funny checking the envelope next to testy and seeing the message "you have 5300 posts in this thread" normally this would been followed by a complaint in forum fee
