“It was so silly” That was Sandra’s verdict after we left the theatre, Well I really enjoyed it.Van Helsing was directed by Stephen Sommers whose previous two films were The Mummy & The Mummy Returns so I knew exactly what to expect, over the top visuals, frenetic action, barely pausing for breath, loud music, it was a fun romp thru all the familiar horror clichés. Even the famous wolfman poem gets an airing: “Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.” There are some fearsome werewolves in this, expertly rendered in cgi. And three sexy voluptuous vampire brides of Dracula who turn into screaming harpies when out terrorizing the neighbourhood. Kate Beckinsale is gorgeous as usual. And nothing really scary, Sandra never covered her face once. It’s an action film, Van Helsing is James Bond in Transylvania, he even has a ‘Q’ outfitting him with weapons to defeat the monsters with. Mike I think your son will enjoy it very much. But I’m not sure it’s gory enough for Katie though. [Isn’t there an anime called Hellsing?]

Looks as if I'm going to have to take the collective to see it now. Steve likes a bunch of what I like. Except we disagree on that 10hr. camping trip, cry-fest of a trilogy.

A Real Man's Review of the LOTR Trilogy

I liked Gollum (although I'm thankful for subtitles) and just loved Gandalf(Ian). That mumble-mouth robot King Viggo Strider and Bawl-Baby Frodo turned me off a bit though. I don't recall in my 3-4 trips through Mr. Tolkien's books, Frodo stopping to rest, cry and nibble elf-bread every few miles. Justin Timberlake was pretty darn good as Legolas and it looks as if he can surf a bit too. Was Danny DeVito a good choice for Gimli though? Mr. Bean was outstanding in his role as Boramir. Funny, I still like TTT the best of the three and it was the most bullshit of all of them! There is also a wide-eyed dark haired girl (appears 4-5 y/o) that plays a hobbit listening to Bilbo's story at the beginning of FOTR and happens to be also someone's human child in Gondor in ROTK. Great sets, costumes, music and some good acting. Just too much crying and I'm a sensitive guy. Oh and Agent Smith just about ruined the whole bit. He couldn't stay in character.
The Whole Trilogy= C+
The Two Towers = B for surfing and not much Agent Smith.

So, I guess 13-year old son will LOVE it and I'll find certain parts of it enjoyable, eh?!

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

Mike, yes your son will love it, I mean he's 13, a teenager now, jeez when I was 13
I was already growing very fast, several times a day in fact.

Plenty of gazongas for you to ogle Mike, not much in the acting department, but hey you can't have everything, it's a fun ride in the ghost house.

Zen, hohoho I agree with some of your rather pithy review of this fantabulous trilogy, you're right there is too much crying, and I was misty-eyed myself a couple times, but the good stuff far outweigh the bad in Jackson's magnum opus, we will never see it's like again, ever, and that saddens me, oh well we still have Van Helsing Monster Slayer to keep us happy.

Spoiler:
I forgot about the Kate factor. Hmm can I trade Katie factor for Kate factor? Oh no here she...phew that was close. Hehehehe, I can hide in here. She'll never figure out the black box.

So yes gentleman, I think it would be splendid to view Van Helsing this weekend. If only to honor the fine relationships that I have around me. Fine film, fine friends.

Spoiler:
Don't you believe it! Kate's smoking body is the only reason I'm going to this. DAMN, that woman is hot!!

Cheerio!

Trying to decide whether to accompany 13-year old son to see it.

I second Steve's recommendation. It's really a cartoonish action film, not a horror film. There's no gore to speak of. If you'd let him watch Indiana Jones or James Bond, this is in the same category.
