There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

I can't believe I've been hanging around this place for 8 years.

Some would say yes.

Goodbye Sandy.
Actually I prefer to think of myself as a "technology shyster"...

As usual, you had stumped me. But never mind. I figgered it out.

Well I finally sold off the last remnants of my old HT. It's amazing how effective advertising in Craigslist has become...I also sold off my extra set of alloy wheels for the Miata.
I got rid of my grossly-heavy particleboard desk the easy way...by putting it at the curb with a "free" sign on it. Scavengers drive through my neighborhood and pick stuff like that up. It only lasted about 2 hours last weekend. Since charities here won't accept desks, this is a cheap alternative to hauling it to the dump. An old maple dresser/bookshelf item from my youth was given to a friend for his son's room. The Office Depot computer desk I'm presently writing from will be put curbside when I move...I'll buy a more comfortable desk/office suite when I get to Boise.
Little by little my burdensome possessions are walking out the front door, making the move that much easier.
Next stop in my white-trash metamorphasis....a camper shell for my pickup truck. Pa Joad has nothing on me. My optimistic plan is to hook up with a realtor my Boise friend referred who also represents landlords as a property manager. I'd like to get pre-approved as a tennant through him, and then drive the pickup out to Boise, see several candidate rental houses in a day, select one on the spot, and take "immediate" possession. I can pack a basic household into my truck. I would camp out in the rented house for a few days while I get utilities turned on, open a checking account with the address, etc., then fly to San Jose to organize the "main move".

So you make the "main move" into the rental house and then search for a more permanent residence from there?
We had good luck with Craig's List recently in the sale of of an old sofa and an old entertainment center. Both were nice pieces of furniture...but didn't move when we spent $20 apiece on ads in the local newspaper. The free Craig's List listing sold them both!
How about that Pioneer LD player and discs? Ever move them? I know you were asking a lot!

Yes, I can't see the wisdom in trying to buy a house long-distance when I don't know the neighborhoods that well. Give me 6 months living in a rental house and I'll know the Treasure Valley situation like the proverbial back of my hand. Then I can shop in earnest for a house to buy. And if I am taken with a fixer-upper, it would be much easer to work on it prior to moving in. Cross-town moves are easy when compared to a 700 mile move from San Jose to Boise. I can probably move myself cross-town with my F150.
GrantB here picked up the LD setup yesterday.

That sounds like a very wise plan indeed.
Wished I had done the same when making a 140 mile move into a new home 18 years ago. I rushed things and have regretted it ever since. In fact, I usually characterize it as the worst decision I've ever made in my life.
Re: GrantB (from Haight/Ashbury IIRC) That's great news!
