I'm finally half-way through the ruling. Interesting stuff.

Re: Test
Delayed reaction: she looks like you, Mike!
(Did I say that once before already?)
Very nice text.
My own daughter isn't at that point yet (just broke up 3 months ago with her then-current boyfriend). She recently completed her medical study, except for a "choice-internship" of 3 months, which happens to be in our home town Amsterdam, so she will stay with us for at least three months.
(The house has just been reconstructed in a major way, so we're still a bit in a mess. My feelings are mixed.)

The secret of the text is that it's my wife's work. It's my story--don't get me wrong--but my wife is the tweaker of the tale. But, I'm not supposed to say that much...or any more... Thank you!

Cees,
Years ago USSC decisions were issued and the dissents were an appendage. There was little or no cross-referencing in them. Nowadays the drafts of the majority and dissenting opinions are sent back and forth, and include direct quotes from each other along with rebuttals. This cross-referencing makes the present study of law tiring. Could you imaging having to read and be prepared to discuss 2 dozen cases a week of the complexity of DC v. Heller? That's what modern law school is like in the US.
As a lawyer, I'm dubious about the role of law in a multi-lingual state such as Canada or the EU. An excellent example is how Scalia has to parse the meanings of every term in the 2nd Amendment. What would happen if there was no "controlling" version and it was translated into a dozen languages? Law doesn't translate well...the mere act of translation alters subtle meanings.
I've dealt with the Canadian patent office as well as the European Patent Office (EPO). There have been times when I've been confused, since in Canada all statutes are printed in "dual language versions" and the English and French versions have slightly different emphasis. The EPO is even more of a mess. In the EPO patent applications are processed ("prosecuted") in one of three "official languages": English, German, and French. Once an EPO patent is granted....it's enforceable in NONE of the EU contries directly. It has to be published in each separate country in which enforcement is desired, which means a fee for translation and publishing. A person's patent may have various degrees of coverage in Italy, Hungary, and Spain even though they all derive from the same granted EPO application.
I'm not sure what the resolution of this could be. Bismark was right on the money when he predicted that "the most significant event of the 20th century will be that the fact that the North Americans speak English."

Nice article, Mike.
By the way, did you ever consider that Pixars' writers might be reading your mind?

Re: Test
Thanks, John!
They obviously didn't read my mind about Wall*E. I was a little disappointed by that flick last night.
