Turn on sub-woofer out - how?

I can't seem to turn on the sub-woofer in two different systems:


1. Denon - w. Premier Accoustics sub
2. Onkyo - w. Klipsch sub


Both subs are powered by their own built-in amp. Both receivers are using rca cables to connect powered sub woofer OUT connections.

Both units are on.

You have to set at least the main speakers to small to be able to activate the sub. In virtually all cases, all speakers should be set to small. That is most likely your problem.

just running down the list:
sub power plugged in?
sub turned on?
sub crossover set to maximum (highest frequency)?
receiver has all speakers set to small?
receiver set to use the sub? (enabled, turned on, not phantom, whatever)
Audio level up high enough to trigger auto-on in sub? (I hate auto-on!!)
sub cable plugged to correct jack at both ends? (well, you never know...)

Robert, the problem is, you don't really tell us what the problem is. So, we are left guessing. Are you trying to turn the sub on? Are you trying to get something from the sub out? I could go on.

Sorry - totally frustrated ...I'm not sure what my problem might be; I can't get any sound from the subs in either system.

The RCA cables are connected to the receivers and subs.
The electric power is turned on to each sub
The subs are turned "on" - lights are on.
Sound is comming from 5 other speakers in each system

The receiver manuals on each (hundreds of pages - YIKES!) unit do not discuss setting up the subs that I can see.

I suspect it has something to do with setting up the receivers to tell them to send pre-amp signals to the subs, I suppose.

I can't be the only one who has trouble with modern equipment; right?

Since you mention an Onkyo 805 in another thread. Sounds like you need to go into the "Speaker Setup" menu. Then go to the "Speaker Config" submenu...set the options appropriately Sub=Yes, front/center/surround = 80Hz for starters. If you're running 5.1, you don't have "surround back" speakers so set those off. Recommend "double bass" = "off", personally.

Next you'll want to go into the "speaker distance" menu and at least ball park the numbers. Same with "Level calibration".

Again, if 5.1...make sure your surround speakers are connected to "surround" and not "surround back". SB is for a 7.1 setup.

BTW, the speaker setup (sub is just another speaker) is covered in the "Advanced Setup" section, starts on p.86 of your 805's manual.

Is sub turned "ON", in the receiver's setup menus? It must be on in there too. I'm not familiar with Onkyos, but am with some Denons, and that could be a possibility.

One other thought. You definitely wouldn't be the first to do it with the 805, don't know about the Denon. Are you sure the sub RCA is connected to the preout sub jack and not the analog multichannel sub input. I pointed to the correct jack with the blue arrow.

Thanks guys.

I'll recheck the receiver settings. The Onkyo sub is connected to the pre-amp output jack. ..not sure on the Denon yet.

I read the manual a few times and finanlly got the sub to work on the Onkyo. Anyway, the screen shots in the manual do not match the text display in the receiver, so no wonder I was getting confused.

Many of the screen shots in the manual are differnt, for example, the auto speaker set up is completely different from the manual. My manual is supposed to be corect - Onkyo SR 805.

The reciever puts out great sound but if you can't learn how to use it from a 200 page manual, I would conclude that the product design SUKS.
