Can I use computer speakers?

I would like to hookup some very small speakers to my father's digital cable box. I just need something small and simple to put beside his chair so he can hear the TV better without annoying everyone in the house. Can I use computer speakers for this without connecting them to a stereo? If so, should I use amplified or non-amplified speakers for this? They will be plugged directly into the cable box.

Also, the computer speakers I've been looking at use a 3.5mm jack. Would I connect them to the cable box via a female 3.5mm plug to a dual female RCA plug?

Re: Can I use computer speakers?

You must use amplified speakers since you cable box does not have an amp built into it. And your adapter will work.

Re: Can I use computer speakers?

Here's a stupid question. When amplified speakers or a stereo is connected to a cable box, will anything get damaged if the speakers or stereo are not always on but the cable box is?

Nothing will get damaged. I run my 3 satellite DVR's 24x7. In fact, I even have them on UPS's so that they don't shut down during power outages. Everything else in my system turns on and off. Nothing has been damaged in years other than a mistake on my part with a sub amp.
