Subwoofer needs/opinions.......

Hello all, I'm the resident noob to the site as of now....lol. I have built several powered HT subs before and am looking to either build or buy a new one. This time, if I do either, it will hopefully be the last....lol. I'm looking into the SVS PC Ultra 13, HSU Research VTF3-HO or a pair of Klipsch Synergy Sub-12's. If none of these are highly recommended (as I have no prior experience owning any of these) then I was debating building a new one using a 1000w class D amp from Acoustic Visions and using a Kicker Solobaric L7 15" driver in a box plotted by WinISD. Thoughts/opinions? Anyone ever use a Kicker driver for a diy HT sub? How well do the other subs sound in home use? I've listened to the Synergy-12 at my local Best Buy but have not heard one in an actual home environment. If I decide to go SVS, I was also tossing around the idea of geting their surrond system to go with. Anyways, I'm the new guy and look forward to some informative opinions.

Phillip

I think those Klipsch subs are a class below the other subs you're considering. Those SVS and Hsu options are fantastic. I'm not familiar with the driver you're considering for DIY, so I can't really comment on that.

Well, I understand the Klipsch Synergy's are below the others as far as overall quality/output goes, that's why I was thinking of doing 2 instead of 1. The driver is a Kicker L7 square 15" driver. It's been extensively used in car audio circles for quite some time since they introduced the square shape some years back. They have about 2.5" of excursion and they love ported boxes. I'm trying to get the T/S specs from them as I type. I wonder if the HSU can keep up with the new Ultra 13 from SVS?

Re: Subwoofer needs/opinions.......

Like Seth said, most every sub sold retail does not have the same quality/outptut to $$$ ratio that internet vendors deliver. As for the Hsu vs. SVS, that is a no brainer. The SVS is a larger, more capapble driver. The Hsu is no slouch but it can't hang. Stephe Ponte did a great job designing that driver and Tom Vodhanel did a great job designing a sub around it.

The only times I see someone use a Kicker sub in home theater is when a car audio guy has an extra one and decides to build a sub. Otherwise there are many other more capable, better sounding drivers out there. Since you have already been to Acoustic Visions, check out Exodus Audio, Dayton Audio, CSS and Soundsplinter. Other subs not listed but worthy of checking out are Fi Car Audio, Ascendant Audio, Sound Solutions Audio, Sundown Audio and AE Speakers.

When Kicker "introduced" the square sub, they were being built in the US by Credence Speakers and the original models are still available. Kicker, like most companies, has moved to an off-shore build house.

According to this manual, the L7 15" has 16.3mm of xmax as opposed to the 75mm that you mentioned. Linear xmax is much more important than mechanical excursion (xmech) and it should be stated in one-way, not two-way so that all speakers can be compared equally. The xmax king right now is the RE Audio XXX series with 54mm. It's an amazing speaker using split voice coil technolgy to lower distortion. It also has an equally amazing (STICKER SHOCK!!) price tag.
