Onkyo Home Theatre System

Hey I am looking to buy a reasonably cheap home theatre sound system. I was wondering if this Onkyo HT-SR800 7.1 Channel Home Theater System (sorry cant post links) would be a good purchase. Also would this work if I wanted to use my PS3 as my bluray/dvd player, if so how would I go about connecting it and what else would I have to buy. Or would it be better to buy a BOSE 2 speaker setup for about the same price. I am fairly new to Home Audio, thanks in advance for the help. Im looking to spend around 600$

Re: Onkyo Home Theatre System

The Onkyo's have a good reputation for HTiB. They at least come with an actual receiver that you can build on if you wish to upgrade. I would certainly recommend it over the Bose, which are overhyped and overpriced.

To hook it up, the simplest way would be to go HDMI from the PS3 to the TV for video and optical/coax digital audio from the PS3 to the Onkyo. This is the basic way to get the PS3/HTiB/TV connection working. It gets more difficult when you add more sources, depending on the type of connection and the method you wish to use to switch between sources. Please note that this model HTiB does no converting of video from lower to higher, so each type of source (HDMI/DVI, component, s-video, etc.) connected to the receiver must also have a connection to the TV. So unless your future HDTV source has HDMI, you are probably going to be switching between sources at both the TV and the receiver.

Re: Onkyo Home Theatre System

I've been researching to buy a home theater set-up and time and time again Onkyo seems to be a really good audio company (based on editorial reviews and customer reviews. Plus they're based in NJ, which is about an hour from me.

I'm going with this set-up (I think....)

Onkyo 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver - Black (TX-SR605) $399
Fluance SX-HTB speakers $299

and adding a 120 dollar
Polk Audio PSW10 sub later on if need be

How is the PS3 Blu-ray player? it is the last system I have yet to get...

...lastly American Psycho is a modern classic

Re: Onkyo Home Theatre System

The Onkyo HTIBs have been the best bang for the buck in the $400-600 range for a few years now. It's even better than some systems that a lot more. I have heard many of these systems being a former BB and CC employee. Get the Onkyo system and don't look back.......

Harman Kardon AVR340
Polk rt800i (fronts)
Polk cs400i (center)

Have you hugged your SVS today?
