7.1 SPeaker Usage
Alright, say you have a 7.1 setup. What speakers would Digital cabe use? Would it use SR, SL, and SBx2 speakers or just the SR and SL in 5.1?
Also, the same question for DVDs withjust 5.1 sound. What would they use?

Whatever you tell them to use. You can "force" 7.1 for all material, or let it play in the original format such as 5.1 if you like.

I don't understand... So, with a DVD that is not in DD EX or DTS ES, would the rears sound at all?

You should be able to set it up so that it will use the rears for everything. It is simply a matrix of the two "normal" surround channels.
To answer your original question: if you only wanted 5.1 from 5.1 material, then the sound should come out of the side surrounds.

Ok, I am starting to understand... There is a "quick setup" button on my reciever. In there I can tell it 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1. I'd obviously tell it 7.1. After that, normal DVDs, in just 5.1, would just replicate the same sounds in the SRs into the SBs?

Well it applaied ex without the real cues. A little better than just the same exact signal. But 6.1 and 7.1 are extremely close to each other for sure.
With DTS it's called ES Matrix....

Ok, so how about this question... Say you have 7.1 working just fine for 6.1 encoded movies.
Say you want to leave it in full 7.1 with a regular 5.1(non DX or ES) movie.
In this case, are the SRs any different then the SRs? If they played the same information, you'd have a sound on the left side(SR), go back to both mono SRs. Wouldn't that mess up the sound direction so you heard a little bit in your right ear?

What you should get is a matrix (sum) of the 2 side surrounds.
Clear as mud right?

If you are not watching a movie which is DTS-ES discrete (there is also a matrix version of ES), you will always be getting matrixed rear channels. When you "force" 7.1 for 5.1 material, the rears are again matrixed, so they will not be the same as the side surrounds.

I pulled the trigger tonight on some JBL E10s to use as my SRs. I'll move my N24IIs to the SBs(mono) and keep my PB12, 312IIs and N Center II up front.
We'll see if this 7.1 is the way to go.
