Surround Back Placement Height

In an ideal situation is it better to mount surround back speakers at the same height as the surrounds?

where is your ht setup? is it in a dedicated room or living room? i have my side surrounds mounted on the side wall six feet up and my rear center surrounds i have them on speaker stands behind my couch facing up and all i have to say is, wow!!! I read that tip from another member on this forum who said that he placed his rear surrounds behind his couch on the floor facing up, but i didnt feel too comfortable placing my speakers on the floor so i went ahead and bought speaker stands that were 16" and placed them on top facing up. try it you never know and plus i get responses from people who dont end up seeing them say, "why does it sound like there are more speakers behind me?" my favorite reaction is when they try to localize the sound and see where it is coming from.

My side surrounds are about 6' up also these howerver are dipole design and that's where they should be placed if possible, if my rears were dipoles i'd do the same in the rear but they are direct radiating and i have them on stands so that the tweeters are at the same height as the mains. This is the best set up IMO.

Cool. How far apart did you place your rears behind the couch?

i have the rears at each end of the couch. i am not at home right now so i cant measure to give you an exact estimate, but i have them at each end so that no matter where you sit on the couch, you will be in the middle of both speakers. i really suggest you try it. i turn up the rears by 1/2db from calibration just to give it a bit more push and it worked out great. all surrounds blend in very well and you really notice the transition from the side surrounds to the rear.
